Missouri's longest tunnel transformed into a tourist destination (Photo courtesy: iStock/Getty Images)MISSOURI (KSNF/KODE) — Many people associate tunnels with vehicle traffic, but the longest underground trail in the Show-Me State is actually associated with trains.The Vale Tunnel in Kansas City served the Missouri Central Railroad, which carried passengers across the state, from Saint Louis to Kansas City, and back again, since it first opened in 1904.The 441ft long tunnel travels under Bannister Road — one of the busier east-west routes in the Kansas City Metro. Over the years, this rails-to-trails tunnel has had many different names, including the Vale Tunnel, the CRI-and-P Tunnel, and the Valley of Vale Tunnel. The underground section of this railway saw its last train pass through in 1980, shortly after the Rock Island Railroad declared bankruptcy. Jury convicts St. Louis man of meth trafficking KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A federal grand jury convicted a St. Louis man on Tuesday for attempting to travel with more than 30 pounds of methamphetamine.Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Western District of Missouri said Cregg Matthews, 56, was traveling by bus from Los Angeles to St. Louis on March 9, 2019. The bus had stopped at Kansas City, Missouri, bus station that evening and police were conducting routine drug searches at the terminal.Police brought a K9 unit to assist in checking buses for narcotics or other illegal materials. Tens of thousands of pounds of illegal fireworks were seized from a South Los Angeles warehouse Wednesday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.Around 3 p.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department was "conducting routine compliance inspections" in the 900 block of East 61st Street in the Florence neighborhood when marshals found "a large number of fireworks in a storage room," police said in a news release. The illegal, "commercial-grade" fireworks were seized by authorities, who "immediately began the process of packaging and removing the fireworks from the area, which totaled 38,000 pounds in weight," the release added.
