The Sentencing Project has released its latest report on racial disparities in policing in America. The report is called One in Five: Disparities in Crime and Policing. The report is another example of the longtime criminal justice reform advocates at The Sentencing Project pushing for reform. In its eyes, the battle is over effective and humane responses to crime that minimize imprisonment and criminalization of youth and adults by promoting racial, ethnic, economic and gender justice. The report’s title is based on the “generational shift” as the authors described it that saw one in three Black men born in 1981 likely to see imprisonment drop to one in five in 2001. Some of the report’s biggest takeaways included Black Americans were 9.3 times as likely as whites to be homicide victims in 2020, American Indians were 4.3 times as likely, and Latinxs were 1.9 times as likely, based on age-adjusted figures. By Fatima Hussein, Patrick Whittle and Colleen Long | Associated PressLEWISTON, Maine — President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden stood for a moment of silence and placed a bouquet of white flowers at a makeshift memorial outside Schemengees Bar and Grille, one of the scenes of the state’s deadliest mass shooting.Biden then bent to hug Kathy Lebel, owner of the bar where eight people died in the Oct. 25 massacre. Seven more died at the nearby Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley, three others at hospitals.Biden came to Lewiston on Friday for what presidents do in these moments of horror and grief: Lend comfort to the families of the victims and show support for a reeling community. It’s a trip that has become all too familiar, despite a bipartisan gun safety law passed last year after another mass shooting, and despite a series of executive orders by the president meant to curb gun violence.“Jill and I have done too many of these,” Biden said outside the bowling all...Bay Point shooting victim and driver who died in Cummings Skyway crash after pursuit both were under 18

Published Sat, 23 Nov 2024 14:08:20 GMT
Dabo Swinney is a bit testy these days, which is certainly understandable. He was once the hottest college football coach in all the land, the guy who seemed poised to supplant Nick Saban as the G.O.A.T. of the sideline. Now, after struggling to adapt to the rapidly changing times, ol’ Dabo is suddenly leading a Clemson program that looks downright ordinary. So, when a bold fan called in to challenge the deteriorating state of the Tigers on Swinney’s radio show this week, the coach showed just how thin his skin has become.Let the fireworks begin!“Listen, man, you can have your opinion all you want, and you can apply for the job. And good luck to you,” Swinney angrily lectured a caller identified only as “Tyler from Spartanburg.”While it’s true that a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately mindset is the bane of college athletics, there is no denying that Tyler from Spartanburg was on to something with his critical assessment of Swinney’s once-powerhouse program.Since ...Stock market today: Wall Street closes its best week of the year with even more gains

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 222.24, or 0.7%, to 34,061.32, and the Nasdaq composite jumped 184.09, or 1.4%, to 13,478.28.Stocks surged through the week on rising hopes the Federal Reserve is finally done with its market-crunching hikes to interest rates, meant to get inflation under control. A report on Friday underscored that pressure is easing on inflation after it showed employers hired fewer workers last month than economists expected. It’s a stunning turnaround from just a week ago, when Wall Street was reeling after the S&P 500 had fallen 10% below its high point for the year. That sent Wall Street’s main index into what investors call a “correction.”Since then strong profit reports helped drive some stocks to towering gains. Generac, a maker of backup ge...Latest news
