Remains of Michigan soldier killed in Korean War accounted for after 73 years DETROIT (AP) — The remains of an 18-year-old Army corporal from Detroit who was killed in the Korean War in 1950 have been identified, officials said Thursday. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced that Cpl. Lewis W. Hill was accounted for on May 22 after agency scientists identified his remains using dental and anthropological analysis and other means.Hill went missing in action after his unit was forced to retreat from around Taejon, South Korea, on July 20, 1950, and his body could not be recovered, the agency said. The Army issued a presumptive finding of death more than three years later, on Dec. 31, 1953, the agency said. After regaining control of Taejon in the fall of 1950, the Army began recovering remains from the area and temporarily interring them at a United Nations military cemetery. A tentative association was made between Hill and a set of remains recovered at that time, but definitive proof could not be found, and the remains were determined to be unidentifi...

Is it the Pac-2 championship game when No. 14 Oregon State visits No. 21 Washington State? Most opponents who come to the Palouse when Washington State is good and its home stadium is packed walk into a buzzed environment where they are not welcomed. Then there’s Oregon State, which brings the No. 14 team in the country into that setting on Saturday to face the 21st-ranked Cougars. And right now, there’s no animosity from the Cougars toward the Beavers in any way.The events of the past couple of months have left Washington State and Oregon State as partners, bonded far deeper than being the Pacific Northwest’s land-grant schools based in true college towns. They are the Pac-2 – at least for now – starting next year and potentially into the future. The Beavers and Cougars are united as the outsiders no other conferences wanted when the foundation of the Pac-12 crumbled this summer. And they’re moving ahead on trying to rebuild their conference with themselves as the centerpieces.“Oregon State and Washington State belong competing at the highest level,” Oregon State coa...

(AP) — The South Florida school building where 14 students and three staff members were fatally shot in a 2018 massacre will be demolished next summer, officials announced Thursday. The demolition of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s 1200 building, which has remained closed and locked behind a fence since the Parkland shooting, is scheduled to take place immediately after the end of the school year, Broward County Public Schools said in a statement.“We understand the urgency of this matter, but it is essential to prioritize safety above all else,” it said. “In preparation for the demolition, crews will clean and clear the building, adhering to state and the Environmental Protection Agency’s landfill disposal regulations.”Classes have long-since resumed at the Stoneman Douglas campus while the building with bullet-riddled and blood-splattered walls remained. Steelers offensive coordinator Matt Canada is getting booed. Time to silence fans may be running out PITTSBURGH (AP) — Matt Canada has been here before. Many times. At LSU. At Maryland. At Wisconsin and nearly every other stop during the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator’s nomadic coaching career.Pressure comes with the gig when you make a living sitting in “the chair” as Canada calls his seat in the coach’s box.Still, what happened in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s game against Cleveland was new, even for someone as well-traveled as Canada. When Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett was overrun for a 3-yard loss with just over three minutes to play, forcing a punt that gave the Browns one last possession, chants of “Fire Canada” bounced from one side of Acrisure Stadium to the other. The outburst was brief. It was also unmistakable. And, to hear Canada tell it, understandable.“They want us to play better,” Canada said. “There’s nothing wrong with their passion and those things … We’re not running away from it. We expect to be better. We’re going to...

Beacon Hill Democrats reach deal ‘in principle’ on tax relief bill Top Democrats on Beacon Hill said Thursday afternoon that they reached an agreement “in principle” on a tax relief bill that has sat idle in some form for more than a year, pledging to file the legislation and take it up next week.Tax relief talks were first scrambled last summer after a once-obscure law known as Chapter 62F required state officials to send billions back to residents in the form of tax refunds. Lawmakers this year ushered a new bill into private negotiations in June after both the House and Senate passed competing versions. In a joint statement, House Speaker Ronald Marinao, Senate President Karen Spilka, and Ways and Means Co-Chairs Rep. Aaron Michlewitz and Sen. Michael Rodrigues said they were “thrilled to announce that an agreement has been reached in principle that reconciles the differences between the House and Senate tax relief packages.”“We look forward to filing and taking up the conference report next week, which responsibly implements our shared goal of m...

MIAA Board of Directors meeting: Taunton’s officiating class proving to be a hit Taunton athletic director Mark Ottavianelli is well aware of the referee shortage in the Commonwealth and is doing his part to help the cause.Taunton High School has offered a Sports Officiating Class at the school in hopes of enticing younger males and females to consider officiating. Much like any other course at the school, students receive grades for the class as well as from RefRaps, an officiating educating system. As of now, there are 20 students enrolled in the course.“There were two reasons why we started it,” said Ottavianelli, who explained the initiative at Thursday’s MIAA Board of Directors meeting. “The first is that it provides students an opportunity to become officials, which will hopefully help with the officiating shortage. Secondly, being an inner city school, it gives our kids an opportunity for employment, a chance to make some money.”Ottavianelli credits Chris Green, a community liaison for the Taunton Public Schools and an assistant basketball coach at ...
