MIAMI — A’s manager Mark Kotsay’s first full year in Major League Baseball came in 1998 with the Marlins. He was part of a team that featured budding young stars like Cliff Floyd, Edgar Renteria, Álex González, Liván Hernández, and Luis Castillo. That team — managed by Jim Leyland — went 54-108.Kotsay tries to lean on that experience as he guides an Oakland team that is on track to finish 2023 with a much worse record. After their 7-5 loss to Miami on Sunday, the A’s are now 12-49 having won just five times in 25 road games.“We are in a situation that’s kind of unprecedented,” Kotsay said before Sunday’s game. “(That) rookie year for me and a lot of my teammates, we can name a ton on that roster who went on to have pretty successful careers.“So I think you have to draw on that a little bit as a leader and kind of help these guys with their vision, even though we’re going through a tough time and they’re being challenged. KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia says it thwarted a large Ukrainian attack in the eastern province of Donetsk, though it’s unclear if this was the start of a Ukrainian counteroffensive. The Russian Defense Ministry, in a rare early morning video Monday, said its forces pushed back a “large scale” Ukrainian assault on Sunday at five points in Donetsk, one of four Ukrainian regions Russia illegally annexed last fall.“The enemy’s goal was to break through our defenses in the most vulnerable, in its opinion, sector of the front,” said the ministry’s spokesman, Igor Konashenkov. “The enemy did not achieve its tasks. It had no success.”Konashenkov said 250 Ukrainian personnel were killed, and 16 Ukrainian tanks, three infantry fighting vehicles and 21 armored combat vehicles were destroyed.Ukraine didn’t comment, and often waits until the completion of its military operations to confirm its actions, imposing news blackouts in the interim. For months, Ukrainian officials have spoken of plan...3 takeaways from the Chicago Cubs’ 7-1 win in San Diego, including Miguel Amaya making the most of his return to the majors

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The U.S. Navy said Monday its sailors and the United Kingdom Royal Navy came to the aid of a ship in the crucial Strait of Hormuz after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard “harassed” it.
