JENKINSVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Federal regulators have lessened the severity of their warning about cracks discovered in a backup emergency fuel line at a South Carolina nuclear plant northwest of the state capital. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission downgraded its preliminary “yellow” warning for V.C. Summer Nuclear Station issued this October to a final “white” one after owner and operator Dominion Energy showed its generator could still run for six hours in an emergency, the agency announced Thursday. That demonstration calmed officials’ concerns that Dominion Energy’s failure to maintain cracks and leaks — discovered at least five times over two decades — had neutralized the plant’s ability to cool down its reactors if electricity failed. The new rating means that the generator is underperforming but still meeting its key targets.“While not indicative of immediate risk, this finding underscores the need for continuous vigilance and improvement in the plant’s ...Texas police release new footage in murder investigation of pregnant woman, boyfriend

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A Texas police chief says investigators hope surveillance video will lead to answers in the killings of an 18-year-old pregnant woman who disappeared before Christmas and her boyfriend, both of whom were found with gunshot wounds in a car and may have been dead for days.Police on Friday had not named a possible motive or suspects as family and friends mourned the deaths of Savanah Nicole Soto, 18, and Matthew Guerra, 22. Soto’s family has said she was overdue to deliver her baby and had been scheduled to have an induced labor when she went missing last week. The couple were found Tuesday in Guerra’s car outside a San Antonio apartment complex, a crime scene that San Antonio Police Chief William McManus originally described as “very, very perplexing.” On Thursday, police asked the public for help identifying two people seen in surveillance video that included the car and was recorded before the bodies were found. (NEXSTAR) — Unlike 2022, when several states approved recreational marijuana, 2023 was a relatively quiet year for marijuana legalization. It was only Ohio that successfully legalized the recreational use of marijuana this year. In November, voters approved a citizen-initiated statute to allow Ohioans 21 years and older to possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis and up to 15 grams of cannabis extract. They can keep up to six cannabis plants or up to 12 if there are two adults at least 21 years old in their household. Ohio, already one of the more than a dozen states to have legalized medical cannabis, became the 24th state to legalize recreational marijuana. The Kentucky General Assembly also legalized medical marijuana this year, Nexstar's WDKY reports, but patients will have to wait until 2025 for the program to officially launch.
