A multi-truck crash involving hazardous materials kills 2 on German highway BERLIN (AP) — Crashes involving multiple trucks, including one transporting hazardous materials and another carrying tanks of nitrous oxide, killed two people on a highway in Germany, according to German news agency dpa. The chain of collisions happened Tuesday by a construction site on the A2 highway near the city of Magdeburg. The truck with the hazardous materials crashed into three other trucks and then a fifth truck loaded with the high-pressure tanks crashed into the other four, dpa said Wednesday. What makes Idalia so potent? Intensely warm water that acts like rocket fuel Feeding on some of the hottest water on the planet, Hurricane Idalia is rapidly strengthening as it bears down on Florida and the rest of the Gulf Coast. It’s been happening a lot lately.“It’s 88, 89 degrees (31, 32 degrees Celsius) over where the storm’s going to be tracking, so that’s effectively rocket fuel for the storm,” said Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach. “It’s basically all systems go for the storm to intensify.” LIVE: Hurricane Idalia at Category 4 strength That water “is absurdly warm and to see those values over the entire northeast Gulf is surreal,” said University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy.Hurricanes get their energy from warm water. Bridge: Aug. 30, 2023 Cy the Cynic believes in the happiness of pursuit; he dates three or more women every week. But Cy can’t handle commitment; he says there is one way to have a successful marriage, and if he learns what it is, he might re-marry.Cy’s least favorite holding is a doubleton K-Q; it reminds him of marriage. Cy was today’s South in a penny game and shuddered when he beheld his heart holding.NINE TRICKSAgainst 3NT, West led a diamond: deuce, king, ace. Cy cashed the king of clubs, led to dummy’s jack, took the ace and conceded a club. He then had nine tricks — four clubs, three hearts and two diamonds — but his communication was so tangled that he couldn’t take them. The defenders were careful, and Cy went down.“What I expected when I saw those hearts,” the Cynic scowled.Cy failed to manage his entries (my topic this week). Ask Amy: I was shocked to hear I’m selfish because I like to rescue people Dear Amy: I have lived my life trying to help people.I have “gone to the rescue” many times to help people who were needy or suicidal or addicted and in need of therapy or treatment. And it does make me happy when I think I have been able to help someone.Recently one of my children told me that since I derive happiness from helping others, that I am really selfish and that my actions are no more laudable than those of people who pursue happiness through other selfish means. The idea shocked me.What do you think?– Shocked MomDear Shocked: “Selfish” is probably the most pejorative word to describe your tendency to rescue people, but your child is obviously trying to make a point. You are behaving in a way that satisfies your own needs, but on the selfish scale I’d put your behavior way ahead of, say, someone who ignores the desperate cries of others. Those who need rescuing are no doubt grateful for your so-called selfishness, but a true “rescuer” derives her sense of self through rescuin...
