Iran’s Recurring fear: Southern Azerbaijan Protesting Again
Published Wed, 27 Nov 2024 07:11:21 GMT
Major cities of so-called Southern Azerbaijan – northern regions of Iran — are seeing a massive surge in discontent and demonstrations again. Tabriz, Ardebil, Zendjan, Qazvin, Julfa became centres of the unrest. Students and teachers are taking to the streets to protest serial mass poisoning of schoolgirls by unknown perpetrators. Poisonings are happening all over Iran, and seemingly deliberately targeting girls and female students. They took place in over 200 educational facilities through the past weeks, but security forces are doing nothing, thus confirming the opinion that it’s a governmental plot to intimidate young women, who took active part in the protests. Northern Iran, populated mostly by ethnic Azerbaijani minority – “Southern Azerbaijanis” — suffers from these poisonings more than central regions, not just because it is a peripheral area, but also because it is utterly underdeveloped in terms of medical services. This is part of consistent oppression and discrimination a...Former Raiders tight end Foster Moreau to step away from football after blood cancer diagnosis

Why hasn’t hockey had McDavid vs. Matthews on world stage?

San Jose Sharks coach David Quinn, a huge baseball fan, watched Team USA play Japan in the riveting final of the World Baseball Classic in Miami.Like millions of others, Quinn, whose family for years had Boston Red Sox season tickets, was glued to the television Tuesday night as pitcher Shohei Ohtani faced slugger Mike Trout in a matchup between baseball’s two best players. With two out in the ninth inning, Ohtani struck out his Los Angeles Angels teammate, giving Japan a stirring 3-2 victory.“Oh yeah, I sure did,” watch, Quinn said. “It was exciting.”It was also a reminder that hockey hasn’t had a similar best-on-best tournament in seven years — and won’t for at least another two or three. The 2016 World Cup of Hockey in Toronto, won by a Canadian team that featured current Sharks Logan Couture and Marc-Edouard Vlasic, and former Sharks Joe Thornton and Brent Burns, marked the last time all of the sport’s best players were in one setting.Since then, no Olympic games that have ...Kurtenbach: Jonathan Kuminga has arrived, and perhaps the Warriors have, too

The Warriors have been begging for anyone to step up for these the last few weeks of the season. The Dubs’ big three — Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green — needed reinforcement. The team, as a whole, needed a push. And just in time, someone has come through.Jonathan Kuminga has flashed his prodigious talent before this past week — it’s impossible to hide that athleticism. But to the Warriors, he was a work in progress. The game was still too fast for him. His instincts were not quite honed.I don’t think that’s the case any longer.Kuminga’s game is still in its infancy — he’s 20 years old and in his second NBA season — but he has leveled up in March. He’s no longer a project; he’s an asset, finding a role as the team’s roll man.The wing’s last three games were big-time performances, and driving forces in the Warriors’ first back-to-back road wins since last season’s NBA Finals. The Warriors have been sho...Editorial: Governor’s effort to lower insulin prices is a smart investment

Gavin Newsom is taking aim at the three greedy insulin drugmakers who have made billions in profits at the expense of Californians with Type 1 diabetes who must take the medication every day to survive. The governor announced Saturday a new $100 million, 10-year contract with the nonprofit drugmaker Civica RX to make insulin available at a cost of no more than $30 per vial. Half of the money will go toward developing the insulin product, and the remaining $50 million will be invested in a manufacturing facility.Insulin costs about $10 per dose to produce. In 1995, the price stood at $24 per vial. Today, the drug can cost more than $200. Consequently, one in six insulin users say they are forced to ration their doses because they can’t afford the cost.Newsom believes the state can help patients who now pay out of pocket thousands of dollars a year. While it won’t be easy, he deserves credit for trying to break the oligopoly that’s making basic prescription drugs unaf...A’s hard-working Langeliers ready for a full-time role

MESA, Ariz. — The Athletics did a lot of rebuilding this offseason following a 102-loss season. Shea Langeliers has been working hard this spring to prove there’s one spot they won’t have to worry about. The 25-year-old catcher is the most advanced of Oakland’s young prospects and he’ll be taking on a full-time, starting role after just 40 games in the majors last season.Langeliers has to make up for the loss of Sean Murphy, the A’s catcher who developed a commanding presence at the plate and behind the it over the last four seasons before being traded. But there’s reason for optimism that Langeliers is up to the task.Putting so much trust and faith in a young catcher can be difficult, but veteran A’s pitchers Paul Blackburn and James Kaprielian are confident Langeliers is the right guy for the job.“He fits right in and he’s prepared,” Kaprielian said. “He’s got the tools and the skills and now he’s just going to have to produce on a consistent basis. There’s no doubt in my min...Opinion: Gov. Newsom’s gas plan would hold Big Oil accountable

Exxon collected $6.3 million an hour. Chevron last year doubled its 2021 profits and boasted about “outstanding results” in an earnings call. Valero made nearly 10 times more. While oil companies were raking it in, Californians were paying for it in record high gas prices — $2.61 per gallon higher than the national average. We were charged those sky-high prices even though the cost of crude oil was down and there were no changes to state taxes, fees or regulations. While we all know that gas has always cost a bit more here than in other states, it’s never been by that much.In 2022 alone, oil companies hauled in more than $200 billion in profits. If you or I made $98 million a year for 2,000 years, we still wouldn’t make as much as oil companies did last year. The out-of-control gas prices in California stretched household budgets to the max and forced countless families to choose between things such as putting food on the table or going to the doctor. High fuel costs also inflic...Suspect shot, killed during standoff with San Jose police
