There are several areas of concern for the Avalanche amid a stretch that’s seen it win once in six games.A couple of key forwards are not producing at expected levels. Several forwards aren’t scoring enough at even strength. The power play has gone dry. And coach Jared Bednar has expressed displeasure with the types of scoring chances the team has allowed of late via turnovers and mistakes. That’s a lot to sort through, and some of the issues are more concerning than others. But Mikko Rantanen playing his way out of an uncharacteristic slump could be the Avs’ simplest path back to their winning ways.Rantanen has not scored a goal in the past nine games, and he doesn’t have a point in the past three contests.“You try to learn from the games you play and when you go through a slump a little bit, it takes mental toughness,” Rantanen said Monday morning ahead of the Avs’ game against Calgary at Ball Arena. “You can’t get down on yours...Police shoot, kill armed woman who pointed gun at toddler

A woman who authorities say was pointing a gun at a 3-year-old child was shot and killed by police officers in an incident that has left investigators in San Bernardino confounded.Around 8 a.m. Sunday, SBPD officers responded to the 200 block of E. 21st Street after someone called 911 to report the armed woman. The caller said the woman was inside an apartment and was holding a gun to the head of the caller's 3-year-old grandson. The woman was not related to the child, officials said, and the caller said she had already fired off the gun at least once. When police arrived on the scene they found the woman, whom they described as "very distraught," standing on a balcony and pointing a gun at the caller. She also pointed the weapon at an officer, police said. The woman then retreated into the apartment where the child was still inside and locked the door. Officers kicked the door down, where they found the woman standing on a bed inside the living room, pointing a gun at the child who w...In-N-Out Burger is about to open restaurant No. 400

I would like to add that for many years the Fairgrounds Management Corporation (FMC) has been working to expand the impact and value of this county-owned land.Executive Director Abe Andrade and the board deserve recognition for their patient, persistent work with county and Earthquakes’ leadership that made this possible. Their contributions go beyond grounds enhancements and the recently expanded fair. After the county announced its COVID mandates, the FMC sidelined its public venue operations and transformed the fairgrounds into a major center for testing and inoculation. We have been well served … well served indeed.Ty Greav...Biden’s hurdle: People don’t think the economy is doing well

By Josh Boak | Associated PressWASHINGTON — President Joe Biden goes into next year’s election with a vexing challenge: Just as the U.S. economy is getting stronger, people are still feeling horrible about it.Pollsters and economists say there has never been as wide a gap between the underlying health of the economy and public perception. The divergence could be a decisive factor in whether the Democrat secures a second term next year. Republicans are seizing on the dissatisfaction to skewer Biden, while the White House is finding less success as it tries to highlight economic progress.“Things are getting better and people think things are going to get worse — and that’s the most dangerous piece of this,” said Democratic pollster Celinda Lake, who has worked with Biden. Lake said voters no longer want to just see inflation rates fall — rather, they want an outright decline in prices, something that last happened on a large scale during the Great Depression....Vic Davalillo dies; was part of Oakland A’s team that won 1973 World Series
