"It's my understanding that one ladder truck probably results in at least 16 new firefighters, well that's not a one-time expenditure," Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said. "There's a lot of budgeting in this where you'll see one-time payments and while the ladder truck is something if we had all the money that we wanted to have [it] would be something I would be supportive of, when you're trying to balance the budget those kinds of considerations are made." Heat records to fall the next two afternoons AUSTIN (KXAN) -- One of the weather numbers we are seeing today is a heat index lower than the air temperature. For example, at 1 p.m., the temperature at Llano was 104°. The dew point, the measure of moisture, was 46°. The resulting heat index at Llano was 100°. Early afternoon dew points in the Hill Country were in the upper 40s to mid 50s. Record high temperatures will be set today and tomorrow. Both afternoons are being forecast to reach 108°. Today's record is 105° last set in 1984. Tomorrow's record is 107° set in 1918.A new record high will be set this afternoonThe first 16 days of this month have produced an average temperature of 90.1°. This is the second hottest start to any July, topped by 90.6° the first 16 days of last year.Another heat record will be broken, one involving consecutive days of 105° and higher. Grafton man indicted for manslaughter GRAFTON, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A Grafton man has been indicted for second-degree manslaughter, according to the Rensselaer County District Attorney's Office. The indictment alleges that Anthony Valente, 44, a manager at RJ Valente Gravel Quarry in Grafton, acted in a reckless manner which caused the death of Darren Miller, 35, of Poestenkill, who was an employee at the quarry. On October 1, 2022, Valente was reportedly operating a crane at the quarry and attempting to place a diesel engine in a dump truck when a cable broke off from the crane. Southwest Airlines appoints Roy Blunt to its board of directors DALLAS (AP) — Southwest Airlines has added former U.S. Senator Roy Blunt, a Republican from Missouri, to its board of directors.Blunt, 73, spent 14 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and served in the Senate from 2011 until leaving office in January as the fourth-ranking Republican. He did not seek re-election last year.Since April, Blunt has worked at Husch Blackwell Strategies, a Washington, D.C., lobbying firm that also employs his son and former aides. The firm said Blunt would focus on advising clients and did not plan to register as a lobbyist.Southwest Chairman Gary Kelly said Monday in prepared remarks that Blunt's experience as chairman of the Senate aviation subcommittee would be helpful to the airline.The appointment took effect Sunday. Gas main explodes in Springfield, hundreds without power SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A gas main has exploded north of Lake Springfield, leaving hundreds without power.According to the City Utilities outage map, about 1,700 customers are now affected by the explosion.Police are currently making people leave the area of the 5000 block of South Charleston Avenue as the fire is expanding and power lines could potentially fall.City Utilities said on Twitter that the explosion occurred as crews were performing maintenance on its natural gas distribution system. CU said no injuries were reported.Springfield Police Department officers are on the scene assisting with the evacuation of the area.The Springfield Fire Chief is urging the public to avoid the area to allow emergency workers to safely get the fire under control.
