This summer was a global record breaker for high heat, meteorologists say GENEVA (AP) — Earth has sweltered through its hottest Northern Hemisphere summer ever measured, with a record warm August capping a season of brutal and deadly temperatures, according to the World Meteorological Organization.Last month was not only the hottest August scientists ever recorded by far with modern equipment, it was also the second hottest month measured, behind only July 2023, WMO and the European climate service Copernicus announced Wednesday.August was about 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than pre-industrial averages, which is the warming threshold that the world is trying not to pass. But the 1.5 C threshold is over decades — not just one month — so scientists do not consider that brief passage that significant. Here's his email: Get the latest news, weather, sports and more delivered right to your inbox! Hi Jamie. I recently was on a business trip staying in a hotel that gave me a free breakfast. I got up, got dressed, and went down to breakfast and was truly shocked to see at least three people…adults…still in their pajamas eating breakfast IN A PUBLIC HOTEL!! I understood the few kids I saw in their jammies because they were young, and it was probably easier for the parents. But grown adults….put on some clothes people. A hotel lobby isn't your home kitchen. When I came home and told my wife, she told me I was being too hard on people, but I don't think so. I don't need to see your pajamas at my hotel. What do you think? Is it okay to eat breakfast at a hotel in a public room with your pajamas still on? Help me convince my wife it's wrong.DarrinHere's my take. I wo...

Skelton: Racist housing policy caused the biggest California Capitol brawl Nationally, we just observed the 60th anniversary of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington. In California, there wasn’t a peep about the 60th anniversary of a historic civil rights triumph in this state. That’s understandable. There are probably few people still around who know much about the Rumford Fair Housing Act, which produced arguably the biggest, bitterest brawl ever in California’s Capitol.Looking back, it’s almost inconceivable what the fight was about. It was over whether it should be legally permissible — never mind morally right — for homeowners and landlords to continue discriminating because of skin color in the sale and rental of housing.Spurred by Democratic Gov. Pat Brown, the Democratic-controlled Legislature voted after much anguish to ban racial discrimination in housing. The public backlash was swift. Californians voted by nearly 2 to 1 the next year to legalize discrimination again. But the state and U.S. Supreme courts ultimately ru...
