‘EH!POCALYPSE NOW!’ Americans blame Canada as haze from northern fires continues

TORONTO (AP) — The front page headline of the New York Post screamed “BLAME CANADA!” The Boston Herald has “Thanks Canada,” and the Dallas Morning News front page said “U.S. caught in a Canadian haze.” A thick, hazardous haze of wildfire smoke loomed over daily life this week for millions of people across the U.S. and Canada from over 400 Canadian wildfires. Canadians are unaccustomed to getting the attention of millions of Americans, let alone drawing their ire. Americans quickly poked fun as the smoke-clogged air eerily silhouetted skylines in New York, Philadelphia and Washington. The New York Post also used the headline “EH!POCALYPSE NOW” in reference to Canadians’ frequent use of the word “Eh” and went on to say “It’s the unhealthiest thing to come out of Canada since poutine.” Poutine is the popular dish north of the border of french fries, cheese and gravy.“Sorry!,” Canadian meteorologist Anthony Farnell tweeted in response to the Post headline. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA is tweaking how block/charge calls are made in men’s basketball. The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved rule changes on Thursday that require a defender to be in position to draw a charge at the time the offensive player plants a foot to go airborne for a shot. If the defender arrives after the player has planted a foot, officials have been instructed to call a block when there’s contact.Defenders had to be in position to draw a charge before the offensive player went airborne under previous rules.NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee members made the proposal after NCAA members complained that too many charges were being called on those types of plays. The panel also approved reviews of basket interference calls during the next media timeout — if the official called it on the floor — a shot clock reset to 20 seconds on an offensive rebound that hits the rim, and players being allowed to wear any number between 0 and 99.A timeout...Giants beat Rockies for 11th straight time, 6-4 with 3-run 9th

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Two-time All-Pro safety Kevin Byard will talk about most any topic when asked. Being asked to take a pay cut going into his eighth NFL season by the Tennessee Titans is very different. Byard knows the NFL is a business, and that’s why he’s leaving the Titans’ request earlier this year to his agent and new general manager Ran Carthon. It’s also why Byard hadn’t talked about the Titans’ request until Thursday.“I don’t really want to get into my feelings or anything about that and any emotions …,” Byard said. “I guarantee you I would not be the last player, and I haven’t been the first player, (that had a team) come to about a pay cut.”Carthon, hired in January as the first Black general manager in the franchise’s history, confirmed just before the NFL draft that Byard had been asked to take a pay cut. Byard has never missed a game and led the Titans in both tackles and interceptions each of the past two seasons. B...Questions raised about police shooting of 14-year-old in Aurora

AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — New questions are being asked in the police shooting of a 14-year-old in Aurora.Police say Jor’Dell Richardson was armed when an officer shot and killed him last Thursday in an alley behind a small strip mall, where police allege the teen robbed a vape store.FOX31 heard from a pastor who is part of a committee focused on police training for officers in Aurora. Thomas Mayes, Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance president, said questions need to be asked about what led to the shooting in the first place.“If they (police) were somewhat suspicious, you don't have to stop them. You don’t have to arrest them. You don’t have to ask them any questions. You don’t have to frisk them. None of those things. All you’ve got to do is be there,” Mayes said. The sky cleared up enough for the Chicago White Sox to resume their series with the New York Yankees.Instead of the haze the smoke from Canadian wildfires created, there were plenty of longballs during Game 1 of the doubleheader Thursday at Yankee Stadium. The Sox hit four home runs on their way to their fifth straight win, beating the Yankees 6-5.“Home runs were the name of the game,” Sox manager Pedro Grifol said.Eloy Jiménez put them ahead with a two-run homer off Michael King in the seventh.“(I thought) ‘Just bring (Luis) Robert (Jr.) to home plate,’ ” Jiménez said. “Thank God I did.”Jake Burger, Robert and Yoán Moncada homered earlier for the Sox, who moved within three games of first place in the American League Central with the victory. The teams played two Thursday after Major League Baseball postponed Wednesday’s game because of what it called “clearly hazardous air quality.”Burger lined a t...Matt Dermody’s resurfaced social media bigotry activity paints Red Sox in unflattering light

“Harassment and discrimination have no place within or around Major League Baseball – we must work together to build an even playing field for all those involved in our beloved game.”So reads the penultimate line of Major League Baseball’s official harassment policy.Yet anyone who’s spent time in or around the game, or is familiar with the league’s history, knows that there are often exceptions, especially when it might benefit the on-field product. The Red Sox made such a choice on Thursday night, when they deployed Matt Dermody to start their series finale in Cleveland. Faced with an injury-ravaged, underperforming pitching staff, they selected his contract from Triple-A Worcester, and opened the floodgates.Almost exactly two years ago, Dermody tweeted: “#PrideMonth. Homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God. They will go to hell. This is not my opinion, but the #Truth. Read 1 Corinthians 6:9. May we all examine our hearts, ask Jesus to for...Latest news
