Pretty Boy Floyd at the Whisky

Pretty Boy Floyd at the Whisky: Through unkind, cynical eyes, Pretty Boy Floyd might always be viewed as the also-rans of the Hollywood sleaze rock scene. Their debut album, Leather Boyz with Electric Toyz, wasn’t released until ’89, when the whole hair movement was in the process of winding down, and while the “Rock and Roll (Is Gonna Set the Night on Fire)” single remains a crowd favorite, they didn’t have any major hits. But here’s the thing — it takes more than a few chartbusters to create a valid scene. PBF have a few full lengthers jam-packed with quality, anthemic hard rock, and they continue to work their butts off. This show celebrates their 30th anniversary, and they sure deserve a party.TangenT, Ten Cent Revenge, Villa Nova, Civil Strife, Red Vinyl Gypsies, and Morrigan also perform.Pretty Boy Floyd at the Whisky: The event takes place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 28 at the Whisky A Go Go. &nb...Two wounded in East Oakland shooting

Christopher Snowbeck | Star Tribune (TNS)While rushing to buy holiday gifts, don’t forget another deadline that comes for many consumers each December: spending down dollars in their health FSA account.Flexible Spending Accounts (or Arrangements) are an optional benefit employers establish that lets workers set aside money for certain medical expenses. There’s no tax on dollars contributed to an FSA, so the accounts stretch your purchasing power on everything from eyewear and sanitizing wipes to annual physicals and hearing aids. In recent years, the federal government has expanded the number of products purchasable with FSA funds, but there’s still a significant catch with the accounts.Generally speaking, FSAs are “use-it-or-lose-it” plans.Funds you haven’t spent by the end of the plan year — typically Dec. 31 — won’t roll over into the new year. But the stars must align, and in this case that means: Shortages cease and there are enough injectables to go around; the price comes down to an affordable level for the average consumer; health insurance begins covering these drugs for weight loss; the known side effects prove tolerable enough for long-term use; and no new dire side effects emerge that deter consumers entirely. In other words, there are a lot of “ifs and maybes” involved that make experts like Barry Popkin, a professor of nutrition at the ...Latest news
