Texas using disaster declaration to justify razor wire, buoys By Valerie Gonzalez and Acacia Coronado | Associated PressEAGLE PASS, Texas — Wrecking ball-sized buoys on the Rio Grande. Razor wire strung across private property without permission. Bulldozers changing the very terrain of America’s southern border. For more than two years, Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has escalated measures to keep migrants from entering the U.S., pushing legal boundaries with a go-it-alone bravado along the state’s 1,200-mile (1,930-kilometer) border with Mexico. Now blowback over the tactics is widening, including from within Texas.A state trooper’s account of officers denying migrants water in 100-degree Fahrenheit (37.7 Celsius) temperatures and razor wire leaving asylum-seekers bloodied has prompted renewed criticism. The Mexican government, some Texas residents along the border and the Biden administration are pushing back, with the U.S. Justice Department threatening to sue the state unless steps are taken Monday to begin removing the...

Shohei Ohtani trade market: SF Giants considered the favorites with one week until the deadline It’s hard to imagine a team and market more perfectly fit to embrace Shohei Ohtani than the San Francisco Giants, and as of Monday, the oddsmakers in Las Vegas agree. While the odds of the Los Angeles Angels trading their two-way superstar ahead of the Aug. 1 MLB trade deadline are shrinking — the Angels are just four games out of wild card position — the Giants have surpassed the other 29 teams as the club most likely to acquire him.According to DraftKings’ sportsbook, the Angels (-300) are expected to roster Ohtani on Aug. 2, but the Giants are next in line (+1,000, meaning a $100 bet would generate $1,000 in return). These odds have changed dramatically since last Monday, when the Giants were considered the fifth-most likely team to land Ohtani, behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners. Why the change? The Angels have won six of their last eight games and are about to start a three-game series with the lowly Detroit Tigers, whi...

MLB trade deadline: With Fujinami gone, who else could A’s move? Major League Baseball’s trade deadline looms a week from Tuesday, and the A’s have already offloaded their biggest-name free agent from last winter, sending former top Japanese prospect Shintaro Fujinami to Baltimore in exchange for relief prospect Easton Lucas. The A’s, at 28-74, are 28 games out of the AL’s final wild-card spot and appear poised to continue stripping down their roster over the next several days.Fujinami, 29, struggled mightily to begin his first season stateside after signing a one-year, $3.25 million contract, allowing 24 runs and 19 walks in 15 innings over his first four starts before moving into the bullpen. In a relief role, Fujinami narrowed his focus and showed the dominance that made him a three-time All-Star in Japan. In June and July with the A’s, he allowed seven runs over 19 1/3 innings in 17 outings, striking out 20 batters and walking only six.Fujinami came to the A’s boasting an array of pitches but with a baseball...
