Drivers waited in long lines at local gas stations in South Florida after historic flooding affected fuel at the pump, but officials said there is no shortage. They did, however, ask the public to have patience.A news conference at Port Everglades took place Monday morning where Broward County Mayor Lamar Fisher spoke on the matter. On Sunday, residents experienced the backup of fuel access as lines curved onto the streets outside of gas stations all across Miami-Dade and Broward. According to Fisher, fuel trucks were unable to access gas shipments due to the flooding. As of Monday night, many gas stations had run out, and the gas stations that did have supply were experiencing long lines. “They said they very low on gas and are trying to reset the pumps,” said a woman at a Chevron. “Jesus take the wheel, I got two miles to empty,” said Tonya Melto. A Chevron located on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and South 35th Avenue pumped its last drop of gas as peo...

Brett Baty’s key RBI, big nights from Pete Alonso and others power Mets past Dodgers, 8-6

LOS ANGELES — It took seven pitches against a very tough pitcher, but in the end, Brett Baty prevailed, showing the Mets that they made a smart decision to call him up from Triple-A.The Mets ultimately won the first game of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night at Dodger Stadium 8-6. It was a wild, back-and-forth affair, but the focus of the game was on Baty, the Mets’ rookie third baseman who was called up earlier in the day after tearing up Triple-A pitching. Whether or not he can hit big-league pitching is a question that won’t be answered for a few more weeks or even months, but he took a good step toward answering it with an at-bat in the fourth. The Mets (11-6) had just taken a 4-3 lead over the Dodgers (8-9) with an RBI groundout to score Pete Alonso. Facing right-hander Dustin May with two out and Jeff McNeil on third base, Baty fell behind 0-2. No one bothered to hold McNeil on third base and he took a large lead before May che...

The Miami Dolphins addressed an area of concern in a big way early this offseason, and now, their troublesome secondary from 2022 could transform into one of the NFL’s best in 2023.That’s the impact that acquiring star cornerback Jalen Ramsey, coupled with the addition of highly coveted defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, can do.Ramsey himself said the unit has that kind of potential after landing in Miami via trade from the Los Angeles Rams, who received a third-round pick and tight end Hunter Long in the deal.“I believe so,” Ramsey said when asked if the Dolphins could have the league’s top secondary. “That’s just the type of energy I bring. That’s the confidence that I always have. On paper, this is the best group that I’ve been a part of. And I feel like I’ve been a part of some good groups in Jacksonville and also in L.A. Column: New-age baseball requires adjusting to the pitch clock and finding the right ‘pocket’

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 15:22:30 GMT

It has been only a few weeks, but the pitch clock already has changed baseball, from the beer stands and bathrooms to the on-deck circle. The unintended consequences of installing a clock in the game without a clock include fewer chances to go to the concession stands or take bathroom breaks and a penalty for being so popular the fans give you a prolonged standing ovation upon stepping to the plate, as happened to Chicago Cubs center fielder Cody Bellinger on Friday at Dodger StadiumSome teams have extended beer sales because of the quicker games, but Bellinger and other stars returning for “homecoming games” against their former teams are at the mercy of the plate umpire’s interpretation of the pitch-clock rules. One manager told me the clock also will lead to more big innings, such as the eight-run third the Cubs hung on the Seattle Mariners in a 14-9 win last Tuesday or the nine-run first the Minnesota Twins put up against the New York Yankees in an 11-2 victory t...
