How to stay safe on the water during a busy holiday weekend LITTLETON, Colo. (KDVR) -- Boating season is underway and Memorial Day Weekend is expected to be especially busy.  As people gear up for outdoor activities on the water, Colorado Parks and Wildlife is sharing safety tips to prevent a search and rescue situation. Grant Brown, Colorado boating safety program manager, said it’s important to keep an eye on the afternoon storms that roll in from the west. “If you can be off the water ahead of it, then we recommend that, but if you get caught on the water then you might have to ride out that storm,” Brown said. CPW said 2022 was Colorado’s deadliest year on the water with 36 deaths. Brown said a majority of those deaths occurred from people swimming, paddleboarding or kayaking without life jackets.  Which parks are open for boating during Memorial Day weekend? “One of the key contributing factors is cold water emersion, cold water shock coupled with no life jackets, so the biggest thing for us is life jackets,” Brown said. It’...

KCP's championship pedigree was missing link in Nuggets' drive to Finals DENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets had all the ingredients for an NBA Finals run this season — Nikola Jokic's all-around greatness, Jamal Murray's sweet ball handling, Michael Porter Jr.'s board crashing and arc accuracy, Aaron Gordon's above-the-rim brilliance. The only thing missing was big-game experience.Enter Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who won a title with the Los Angeles Lakers inside the NBA bubble in 2020.The Nuggets acquired the sharp-shooting swingman along with veteran guard Ish Smith from the Washington Wizards last July in exchange for Monte Morris and Will Barton.KCP, the quiet-until-he-needs-to-be player with a lethal outside shot, has been the calming presence on this squad that has sent Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards, Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Anthony Davis and LeBron James on early vacations and has designs on adding either Jimmy Butler or Jayson Tatum to that mix when the NBA Finals finally get here June 1. Biden, GOP reach debt ceiling deal with 2-year agreement work requirements WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reached an “agreement in principle” late Saturday as they raced to strike a deal to limit federal spending and resolve the looming debt crisis ahead of a June 5 deadline, the House speaker said.A deal would avert a catastrophic U.S. default, but risks angering both Democratic and Republican sides with the concessions made to reach it.The Democratic president and Republican speaker reached the agreement after the two spoke earlier Saturday evening by phone, said McCarthy, speaking Saturday night. The country and the world have been watching and waiting for a resolution to political standoff that threatened the U.S. and global economy. With the outlines of a deal in place, the legislative package could be drafted and shared with lawmakers in time for votes early next week in the House and later in the Senate.Central to the package is a two-year budget deal that would hold spending flat for 2024 a...

Mets Notebook: Adjusting to Coors Field altitude, Omar Narvaez continues rehab assignment

Mets Notebook: Adjusting to Coors Field altitude, Omar Narvaez continues rehab assignment DENVER — The altitude in Colorado will sneak up on you if you’re not careful. The 5,200-foot elevation makes it the highest park in the Major Leagues by a long shot. Chase Field in Phoenix is the second-highest at 1,100 feet. When professional sports teams come through town, they have to have to take extra precautions. It’s not as tough for NHL or NBA teams who come to town to play one game in about 48 hours, but baseball teams have to figure out how to adjust and adapt over a three or four-game series. The Mets sent Kodai Senga and Carlos Carrasco back to New York early in order to allow them to get their work done at sea level. They tried to convince Max Scherzer, who pitches Friday in the series opener, to go back with them as well, but he wanted to do his work in Colorado. The reduced oxygen level at high altitudes can not only affect breathing but hydration, sleep and the ability to recover, which is why the Mets wanted their starting pitchers to be able to work...

Are Cincinnati Reds closer to playoffs than Chicago Cubs? ‘We’re not where we want to be, I’m sure of that,’ manager David Ross says.

Are Cincinnati Reds closer to playoffs than Chicago Cubs? ‘We’re not where we want to be, I’m sure of that,’ manager David Ross says. Good thing for the Chicago Cubs they say their focus is on the road ahead.Because objects in the rearview are a lot closer than they appear. In fact, as they took the field against the Cincinnati Reds Saturday night, in third place and slumping, they were one loss combined with a St. Louis Cardinals victory from getting dropped into last place in the National League Central. That may not mean much on Memorial Day weekend in the context of a 2023 season that has four months to go.But if recent indications mean much, those objects in the mirror might be closer when it comes to the longer road of Jed Hoyer’s Next Great Cubs Team and what might be a steeper hill to climb toward October in the National League Central.Much of the Reds’ identified next-gen core is on the team now, including 100-mph starter Hunter Greene, or on the doorstep at Triple A, including the game’s No. 1-ranked prospect, shortstop Elly De La Cruz. And after the 23-year-old Greene — who signed a...

Biden, McCarthy reach debt ceiling deal to avoid default

Biden, McCarthy reach debt ceiling deal to avoid default Top leaders in both parties reached a long-sought deal on Saturday to avoid an unprecedented government default, announcing an agreement on a plan to lift the debt ceiling immediately and apply new caps on federal spending in the name of curbing deficits. To get there, negotiators had to iron out their differences on a small but crucial list of outstanding issues that had dogged the talks in recent days, including lower spending levels, new work requirements for social benefit programs and permitting reforms to expedite approval of energy infrastructure projects — three Republican demands that were opposed by most Democrats. The impasse became so entrenched Saturday evening that President Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who had no plans to speak, staged a break-the-glass phone call in an 11th-hour effort to break the stalemate. McCarthy said during a press call that there's still some work left to do, but he expects to post the legislative text on Sunday, and s...

‘Anatomy of a Fall’ wins Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or, the 3rd time a woman has won top honor Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” won the Palme d’Or at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in a ceremony Saturday that bestowed the festival’s prestigious top prize on an engrossing, rigorously plotted French courtroom drama that puts a marriage on trial. “Anatomy of a Fall,” which stars Sandra Hüller as a writer trying to prove her innocence in her husband’s death, is only the third film directed by a woman to win the Palme d’Or. One of the two previous winners, Julia Ducournau, was on this year’s jury. Cannes’ Grand Prix, its second prize, went to Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” a chilling Martin Amis adaptation about a German family living next door to Auschwitz. Hüller also stars in that film. The awards were decided by a jury presided over by two-time Palme winner Ruben Östlund, the Swedish director who won the prize last year for “Triangle of Sadness.” The ceremony preceded the festival’s closing night film, the Pixar animation ...
