KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The Kremlin's spokesman said Monday that U.N. aid workers who want to visit areas ravaged by the recent Kakhova dam collapse in southern Ukraine can’t go there because fighting in the war makes it unsafe. The United Nations rebuked Moscow on Sunday for allegedly denying aid workers access to Russia-occupied areas where residents are stranded amid “devastating destruction.”The U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine, Denise Brown, said in a statement that her staff were engaging with both Kyiv and Moscow, which control different parts of the area, in a bid to reach civilians in need. They face a shortage of drinking water and food and a lack of power.Brown urged Russian authorities “to act in accordance with their obligations under international humanitarian law” and let them in.Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov didn’t explicitly admit that Russia had blocked U.N. access, but told a conference call with reporters that Ukrainian attacks made a v...Tropical Depression 3 forms, will become hurricane in a few days, National Hurricane Center says

Mass shootings and violence across the U.S. killed at least six people this weekend, including a Pennsylvania state trooper, and wounded dozens of people. Multiple people with guns fired shots at a holiday crowd in Illinois and bullets flew among teenagers partying in Missouri. The shootings follow a surge in homicides and other violence over the past several years that experts say accelerated during the coronavirus pandemic. They happened in suburban Chicago, Washington state, central Pennsylvania, St. Louis, Southern California and Baltimore.“There’s no question there’s been a spike in violence,” said Daniel Nagin, a professor of public policy and statistics at Carnegie Mellon University. “Some of these cases seem to be just disputes, often among adolescents, and those disputes are played out with firearms, not with fists.”Researchers disagree over the cause of the increase. Theories include the possibility that violence is driven by the prevalence of guns in America, or by less a...Gun, motorized bikes used in North Hills robberies; 2 in custody: LAPD

Painter Robert Standish practices a transcendent expressionism in which abstractions become occasions for, and locations of, sensations of awe, wonder, and emotional depth. Guided by organic principles of rhythm, motion, sublimated patterns, saturated color, and rich texture, Standish’s gestures in think paint channel, replicate, honor, and expand on the hidden forces that organize the universe. Eschewing a prior photorealist voice in favor of a different way of connecting with life’s events and experiences, Standish plugs directly into the source now rather than recording its effects. Although his vivid style and intuitive process sometimes alight upon moments that evoke the outside world, it’s Standish’s concern to access a meta-language of pure gesture and color that enriches the interior landscape.Robert Standish, Time and Perspective, Acrylic on canvas, 2022, 30 x 40 inchesL.A. A road trip along Route 66 is an American culture touchstone. The highway that first connected Chicago and Los Angeles in the 1920s became larger than life thanks to the writing of John Steinbeck, the music of Nat King Cole and a certain snippet of lyrics by The Eagles. (You’ll have “standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona” stuck in your head now!)Now, on the eve of the highway’s centennial, Country Living magazine took a look at the top 50 sights on this famous stretch of road. Their list ranges from natural wonders — hello, Grand Canyon — to kitschy glories, like a turquoise and hot pink diner in Kingman, Arizona. There are buildings topped with giant objects — a humongous milk bottle in Oklahoma City, for example. And objects that are art, like the installation commissioned by a Texas tycoon involving 10 graffiti-covered vintage Cadillacs. Here’s a sampling from the big list.
