US calls Nicaragua’s decision to leave Organization of American States a ‘step away from democracy’ MEXICO CITY (AP) — The U.S. State Department called Nicaragua’s formal withdrawal from the Organization of American States on Sunday “another step away from democracy.” The regional body, known by its initials OAS, has long criticized rights violations under Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega. Ortega, who governs alongside his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, has rejected those criticisms and started the two-year process to leave the OAS in November 2021. “The Ortega/Murillo regime’s withdrawal from the OAS is another step away from democracy and further isolates Nicaragua from the international community,” U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller wrote on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.Neither Ortega’s office nor the government commented Sunday. The OAS has said it will continue closely monitoring Nicaragua’s democracy and human rights record even after the country’s exit from the group, which it has belonged to since 1950. Former Gophers football coach Jerry Kill flaunts $1.7 million payday in upset win over Auburn There was a lot of head-scratching in Minnesota when former Gophers coach Jerry Kill took over moribund the New Mexico State football program before last season. The Aggies were conference nomads and had a 8-39 record over the previous four years. After health issues ended his Minnesota tenure in 2015, it looked like the ol’ ball coach just couldn’t give it up. He came back to Minnesota in September 2022 and left with a 38-0 loss to the Gophers. Two weeks later, Wisconsin beat his team 66-7.But Kill stuck with it, reached bowl eligibility and beat Bowling Green to win the Quick Lane Bowl last December. The program had been to three bowls since 1959.Then on Saturday, Kill and New Mexico State improved to 9-3 with a stunning 31-10 victory at Auburn (6-5). The Aggies were 25-point underdogs and came out with the program’s first win against a Southeastern Conference team.Kill told reporters what he said to his players when he walked into the visiting locker room after the game.“I probably...

Why Gophers football has faltered this season

Why Gophers football has faltered this season P.J. Fleck has pushed back at the length of his Gophers tenure being used as a marker for where others believe his program should be this season.“This has nothing to do with Year 7,” Fleck said after a 37-3 loss at second-ranked Ohio State on Saturday. “The last two years are completely different than anything that college football has ever seen. It’s not like, ‘Hey, Year 7, you should be reloading.’ ”Fleck points to the way the NCAA transfer portal and name, image and likeness (NIL) compensation for players have changed the landscape in the past two years. This fall, the Gophers (5-6, 3-5 Big Ten) have fallen off the pace and failed to win the West division championship in its final year of existence.Beyond graduations, the transfer portal and NIL — often combined to one factor — have pinched the Gophers’ overall roster talent and depth. When injuries hit this season, the ramifications of the new landscape are exposed in jarring ways.“There are freshmen running all over that field,”...

Keeler: Jay Norvell’s CSU Rams ain’t easy to find. But unlike Deion Sanders’ CU Buffs, they ain’t hard to watch in November

Keeler: Jay Norvell’s CSU Rams ain’t easy to find. But unlike Deion Sanders’ CU Buffs, they ain’t hard to watch in November FORT COLLINS — Joe Parker has dented too many fenders to point fingers. But the more CSU’s athletic director thought about that fiery 12-car pileup in Pullman, the one that lit up college football’s express lane Friday night, the more he appreciated his call to keep the Rams trucking along the local.“I love what (coach) Jay (Norvell) is doing,” Parker told me Saturday after CSU’s 30-20 win over Nevada pulled the Rams (5-6) to within one win of a bowl berth with a game to play. “I believed in him the moment that we had our first conversation through the (interview) process.“And every day he just affirms that he’s got an incredible way to kind of focus on the things that matter. And what matters most is culture, building a program where every player in the locker room understands the points that they’re going to be held accountable for. And when it becomes less of coach leading those conversations, but more of the players really ho...

49ers pregame: Six-man cornerback crew suits up; Bosa’s brother hurt SANTA CLARA — There are no surprise scratches from the 49ers’ lineup for today’s game, but intrigue remains at how they’ll approach a couple of positions. At cornerback, keep an eye on who the 49ers deploy at nickel back to cover the Bucs’ slot receiver, a job that fell on Deommodore Lenoir in last Sunday’s 34-3 win at Jacksonville, a job that previously was held by Isaiah Oliver. The 49ers (6-3) will have six cornerbacks up to face the pass-oriented Bucs (4-5): Lenoir, Oliver, Charvarius Ward, Ambry Thomas, Shemar Jeep-Charles and rookie Darrell Luter Jr., who makes his NFL debut. On the offensive line, left guard Aaron Banks is out a second straight game because of a hyperextended toe, yielding another start to veteran Jon Feliciano. Rookie Corey Luciano will suit up for the first time in his career, as a backup on the interior line.At running back, Ty Davis-Price won’t suit up for the eighth time this season, as Elijah Mitchell and Jordan M...
