For this Black mom, Ralph Yarl could have been her son

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 02:38:01 GMT

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — On April 13, the nightmare that I’d worried about ever since we moved into our neighborhood came true. That was the day that I learned 16-year-old Ralph Yarl was shot after mistakenly ringing a doorbell at the wrong house while trying to pick up his younger brothers from a playdate. And even as I anguished over what happened to him, one thing kept echoing in my mind: It could have been my child. John, my older son, is 17 and attends the same high school as Ralph. While I’ve adjusted to the awkward stares and su...

Discussions around the pilot began in fall 2021, with a motion to cancel being shot down at council last June. The pilot project will be tried first at the Kingston Frontenac Public Library (KFPL) Pittsburgh Branch, expected to boost operational hours at that branch from 38 to 60-62 per week with patrons accessing unstaffed hours able to call an employee at a downtown branch for assistance.Council approved the $250,000 budget increase needed for upgrades like security cameras, door keypads, and a video phone for customers to call staff.KFPL Board Chair Alan Revill said the pilot has been adopted in response to a community survey that showed the main desire from the public was for improved access to the library, especially in less populated areas of the city.Library workers represe...
