ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Mexican officials raised the death toll to 39 on Saturday from Hurricane Otis, which struck the country’s southern Pacific coast including the resort city of Acapulco early Wednesday as a powerful Category 5 storm. Security Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez said in a recorded video message with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador posted to the platform X that the probable cause of death for the 39 was “suffocation by submersion.” She said the victims had not yet been identified and that investigations continue. The new death toll was an increase of 12 over the initial tally of 27 announced Thursday. But the storm’s human toll was becoming a point of contention as local media reported the recovery of more bodies and López Obrador criticized opponents for trying to make it a political issue.Rodríguez also said the number of missing rose to 10. Hundreds of families have been awaiting word from loved ones.In Acapulco on Saturday, government workers and volunteers c...Late Autumn snowstorm could spell trouble for leafy trees

DENVER (KDVR) -- As a fall storm blankets the Front Range with snow, arborists are already gearing up for a busy week ahead. At Ross Tree Company, General Manager David Boswell says he's preparing for significant damage if forecasted snow totals pan out. View the latest Weather Alerts in Denver and across Colorado on FOX31 "With all the leaves on the trees we may see a lot of failure around the metro area,” said Boswell.Certain types of trees, like maple trees, are especially susceptible this time of year, according to Boswell. Unlike ash and elm trees, which have mostly lost their leaves at this point, many maples are just starting to turn color. “Those leaves could potentially catch that snow, weigh those down, and if you have structural issues in the tree, it’s going to bring those branches down and cause a lot of issues and potentially a lot of failure around the community,” he said.He says routine pruning can alleviate some of those concerns, but says at this point, it's ...Abercrombie & Fitch facilitated ex-CEO’s sexual exploitation of men, lawsuit claims

New York (CNN) — Dozens of men have filed a class action lawsuit alleging Abercrombie & Fitch was complicit in a decade-long sex trafficking scheme carried out by the fashion company’s former CEO.According to the complaint filed Friday in federal court in New York, Michael Jeffries, who ran the company between 1992 and 2014, “used his role as CEO of Abercrombie to prey upon attractive young men who believed that Jeffries was going to hire them as an Abercrombie model.”Abercrombie & Fitch told CNN it does not comment on pending litigation. The complaint alleges Jeffries ran an expansive sex-trafficking operation, coercing and forcing young men to engage in sexual acts in exchange for money and promises of employment. The lawsuit states that, in a series of instances, one aspiring model was invited to multiple Abercrombie & Fitch casting events in New York, France and London, and was sexually assaulted at least seven times at these events. New York (CNN) — You’d be forgiven for failing to remember every twist and turn — every controversial post, weird office update, legal threat and policy rollout (and, sometimes, rollback) — that took place during Elon Musk’s first year owning Twitter.Since Musk closed his $44 billion deal to buy Twitter on October 27 of last year, he has not only rebranded the company as “X” but fundamentally changed what was once one of the world’s most prominent and influential platforms for real-time news and information. By extension, he’s also shifted the social media landscape writ large, as Twitter’s splintering audience seeks alternatives. Here’s a look back at some of the highlights of Musk’s year owning the company, told through tweets — er, Xs?October 2022Following a months-long legal battle attempting to extract himself from his agreement to buy Twitter, which Musk himself had initiated, Musk showed up at Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters on October 26 carrying a bathroom sink. BRUSSELS — Belgium had big plans for its upcoming Council presidency. But its handling of the October 16 shooting spree by Tunisian gunman Abdesalem Lassoued, which left two Swedish football supporters dead, has since led to a series of embarrassing revelations. Lassoued was living residing in the country as an undocumented migrant after Belgian authorities reject his asylum claim in 2020, and was known to law enforcement for “suspicious activities.” His country of origin, Tunisia, had even asked for his extradition — a fact missed by the country’s judicial system. Belgium’s justice minister quit while the country’s interior affairs and asylum and migration ministers had to appear twice before lawmakers to explain why they, too, shouldn’t resign. For Belgium it’s been an awkward lead-up to its Council presidency, having wanted to impress in those very areas where it has now clearly failed: migration and the fight against organized crime. Mike DelNegro has lived around the corner from Sister Mary Veronica Park for seven years, and more days than not, he stops by the shady and peaceful space in South Boston to walk his dog and catch up with neighbors.DelNegro hopes there’s a future where his infant daughter will get to roam around the pocket park, snuggled on West 8th Street, between Grimes and F streets, but whether his aspiration comes to reality is far from certain. The Archdiocese of Boston put the community gathering spot, featuring a statue of Virgin Mary, benches and five mature trees, on the market earlier this month, and neighbors are crossing their fingers that the property is not turned into housing.“If they wanted to turn the pavement into grass, I wouldn’t argue,” DelNegro told the Herald, “but otherwise it’s just nice to have a little spot with trees, open space, and there’s not a lot of other options for that in the area. That’s why we love it so much.”DelNegro joined dozens of his neighbors at the park ...Latest news
