By JORDI LEBRIJA (Associated Press)ENSENADA, Mexico (AP) — Tropical Storm Hilary swirled northward Sunday just off the coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, no longer a hurricane but still carrying so much rain that forecasters said “catastrophic and life-threatening” flooding is likely across a broad region of the southwestern U.S.As of 8 a.m. Pacific time, Hilary was located about 220 miles (350 kilometers) south-southeast of San Diego, the National Hurricane Center reported. Hilary had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110 kph) and was moving northwest at 25 mph (41 kph). The Mexican cities of Ensenada and Tijuana remained directly in the tropical storm’s path, and meteorologists warned that despite weakening, the storm remained treacherous.One person drowned Saturday in the Mexican town of Santa Rosalia, on the peninsula’s eastern coast, when a vehicle was swept away in an overflowing stream. Waterton Canyon in Jefferson County reopened to recreation Sunday as firefighters continued to contain a small wildfire in the area, authorities said.The small fire started Saturday around 2 p.m. and burned about an acre-and-a-half, according to West Metro Fire Rescue. Authorities on Saturday closed the canyon, which is a popular area for hiking, biking, running and other outdoor recreation southwest of Chatfield State Park, to everyone except emergency crews.Heavy rain on Saturday night helped to keep the fire small, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office.The fire did not cause any evacuations and no structures were threatened. By Bay City NewsAt least one person is dead after a traffic collision involving a single vehicle and a pedestrian along U.S. Highway 101 in Santa Rosa, the California Highway Patrol reported late Saturday night.At around 11:29 p.m. Saturday, a black Chevrolet Camaro allegedly collided with a pedestrian along northbound Highway 101 north of the Todd Road onramp in Santa Rosa. Nearly two dozen people in Santa Clara County are facing allegations of operating a “family and friends” auto insurance fraud ring.Seven people were arrested on Tuesday for alleged insurance fraud and conspiracy. Multiple agencies participated in the arrests, including the San Jose Police Department, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, and the California Highway Patrol.Authorities have named the suspected ringleader as a 34-year-old San Jose resident. According to the California Department of Insurance, the ringleader allegedly organized a four-year fraud scheme involving at least 40 different vehicles, which netted over $174,000.The fraud was first uncovered as a result of a damage inspection that was inconsistent with claims of an accident. SAO PAULO (AP) — A bus carrying fans of the Brazilian soccer team Corinthians crashed Sunday following a match in the city of Belo Horizonte, killing at least seven people and injuring 36 others, police said. The seven dead were members of a club of supporters of Corinthians called Gavioes da Fiel. They had traveled from the city of Taubaté in northeast Sao Paulo state to watch their team’s 1-1 draw with Cruzeiro in a Brazilian championship game Saturday evening.Passengers told local media the bus lost its breaks and flipped over trying to avoid a head on crash with another bus.Corinthians said in a statement it will give support to families of the victims. DENVER (KDVR) -- One person died in a crash involving a bicyclist and a vehicle in the area of Interstate 25 and Santa Fe Drive Sunday morning, according to Denver Police.According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the crash has caused traffic issues for southbound I-25 between U.S. 85 and the exit at Lincoln Street. DENVER (KDVR) -- Ed Sheeran's tour stop at Empower Field at Mile High has set a new record for attendance, with 85,233 people coming out to watch the pop singer-songwriter.Sheeran's +-=÷x tour -- also called the Mathematics tour -- came to the Mile High City Saturday and shattered the single-night attendance record at Empower Field.Capacity is normally 76,125, according to the stadium's website, but it can hold more for concerts.The tour featured two special guests: Singer-songwriter Khalid and singer-songwriter Cat Burns.This isn't the first record that has been broken at the stadium this summer.Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in July was the first act in history to sell out two shows in the stadium for a single tour.Latest news
