BALTIMORE (AP) — Nick Pivetta allowed two hits in seven impressive innings and Trevor Story hit a two-run homer in the fifth to lift the Boston Red Sox to a 3-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night.A day after winning the AL East title, the Orioles did little offensively but had to be encouraged by their own starter’s effort. John Means (1-2) pitched into the seventh inning and looked like a solid option for Baltimore when it sets up its postseason rotation.Means was Baltimore’s opening day starter last year but needed Tommy John surgery and didn’t pitch again for the Orioles until this month. This was his fourth start. The left-hander retired his first 13 batters before Rob Refsnyder doubled and Story followed with a drive over the big wall in left field at Camden Yards. The Red Sox also scored a run in the ninth.Means allowed three hits in 6 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and no walks.Pivetta (10-9) struck out 10 with a walk. NORWELL – In a one-score game to start the third, Norwell’s defense came up with a timely stop and from there drove it down the field 97 yards to seal the eventual 27-7 victory over South Shore Sullivan rival Abington at home.“It was huge,” said Clippers coach John Willis about coming up with the stop against Abington in coach Jim Kelliher’s 50th and final season. “We played well on both sides of the ball. It was a big play of the game to get that stop and then go 97 yards, but you are never out of it with (Abington). We knew it would be a dog fight. The score is not indicative of the type of game that it really was. We played well tonight. We played our best game of the year.”Abington (3-1) started the second half at the 50 and, after a couple of negative plays, a 51-yard strike to senior Ryan Simonetti set up the Green Wave at the three-yard line. Two plays later junior Andrew Lazcano came up with a fumble recovery at the Norwell (4-0) three-yard line. The Clippers then ate 10:14 o...Nick Pivetta finishes season strong, Red Sox beat Orioles 3-0

Nick Pivetta’s career with the Red Sox was at a crossroads. Pulled from the starting rotation after a poor spring, the right-hander was left with a choice: embrace his move to the bullpen or pout his way out of town.Pivetta didn’t pretend to be happy about it, but he attacked his new assignment with renewed determination and ultimately turned his season around. Friday night he finished what wound up being a productive season on a high note, earning the win in Boston’s 3-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. From the opening pitch Pivetta was masterful, allowing only three baserunners over his seven shutout innings. The only threat he faced came in the bottom of the fifth when Jordan Westberg doubled and reached third on a wild pitch, but Pivetta struck out the next two batters to keep the Orioles off the board.Pivetta finished with 10 strikeouts, marking the fourth time this season he’s reached that mark, and allowed only two hits and a walk over his brilliant...‘You can’t ever end the push’: Director of player personnel Gene Watson brings a championship pedigree to the Chicago White Sox

It seemed like the perfect moment at the perfect time. Just after the third inning Thursday night at Camden Yards, the Orioles were up 1-0 against the Boston Red Sox and widely expected to clinch the American League East title before a jubilant crowd, when Gov. Wes Moore and Orioles Chairman/CEO John Angelos — side by side and applauding — suddenly appeared on the stadium’s video board. Beneath the two men was a statement that seemed to bring even more good baseball news.In all caps, it said the team, the governor, the state and the Maryland Stadium authority had that very day, after three years of frustrating negotiation, “AGREED TO A DEAL THAT WILL KEEP THE ORIOLES IN BALTIMORE AND AT CAMDEN YARDS FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT 30 YEARS!!”Neither side would discuss it that night but promised details the next morning. Unfortunately, the scoreboard claim didn’t stand up to the light of day.At a news briefing Friday morning, where journalists were tol...Latest news
