When earthquake warnings sent drivers on a Japanese highway scrambling for safety Monday, UMass Boston student Suzu Aoyama was among them. Aoyama, 20, shared video of the scene and later spoke with 7NEWS about her experience as the 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck.“Everything was shaking,” she said. Though she goes to school in Boston, Aoyama was home in Japan on winter break at the time of the earthquake, which has since been followed by a series of other quakes.“I was in the car and I was going to my home and the ground started to shake and the car was shaking so hard,” she said. Aoyama is from Matsumoto in central Japan, about 150 miles from the spot where Monday’s tremors began. Her town didn’t suffer much structural damage. Images from communities near the earthquake epicenter, though, showed buildings reduced to rubble, huge cracks in concrete and fires breaking out. ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- A suspect who died last month after an alleged retail theft that resulted into a pursuit crash last month in the Escondido area has been identified, local medical officials said.Shevondia Compare-Bell, 18, was announced as the deceased, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office said on its website. On the evening of Dec. 18, three suspects, two women and one man, were reported to be involved in a theft at a Dick's Sporting Goods store on Auto Park Way, according to the Escondido Police Department (EPD).The suspects left the scene in a pickup truck, which was later identified as a stolen MCAS Miramar vehicle, per EPD. Both the victim and the suspect of a stabbing in East York on Monday night are in hospital with serious injuries.Police arrived on scene to the location of O’Connor Drive and Dohme Avenue just after 8:00 p.m. and located a man with stab wounds.Police initially reported that the suspect was in custody and the victim was being transported to hospital, but later said both the suspect and victim had been transported to hospital with serious injuries.There is an ongoing investigation and those in the area should expect road closures.South Korean opposition leader is attacked and injured by an unidentified man

Les McCann, a prolific and influential musician and recording artist who helped found the soul-jazz genre and became a favorite source for sampling by Dr. Dre, A Tribe Called Quest and hundreds of other hip-hop performers, has died. NANAO, Japan (AP) — A series of powerful earthquakes hit western Japan, leaving at least eight people dead and damaging buildings, vehicles and boats, with officials warning people in some areas on Tuesday to stay away from their homes because of a risk of more strong quakes.Aftershocks continued to shake Ishikawa prefecture and nearby areas a day after a magnitude 7.6 temblor slammed the area on Monday afternoon.Eight people were confirmed dead in Wajima city, officials said.
