Report: lifeguards turned away because of technological glitch Editor’s Note: The video above shows KXAN News Today’s top headlines for March 30, 2023.AUSTIN (KXAN) — Every Summer the City of Austin relies on hundreds of lifeguards to watch over city pools.The hiring process begins in November and to successfully run all 34 pools the city needs about 860 lifeguards.In 2022, over 1,000 people applied to be lifeguards, PARD hired about 422, and over 200 lifeguards returned from earlier seasons, but some qualified candidates received an inaccurate notice of non-selection according to a recent report.The report states: “We found that 95% of lifeguard applicants received notices that they were not selected for the position. These notices were not usually an accurate reflection of the applicant’s status. For example, 93% of the 422 lifeguards eventually hired by PARD received an inaccurate notice of non-selection.”There is a process that potential candidates must go through which includes a background check, a lifeguard certification course and addit...

Daniel Perry, an Army sergeant and part-time Uber driver, was indicted in the case in 2021 on felony charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and a misdemeanor charge of deadly conduct. Atmospheric rivers bring record breaking snowpack AUSTIN (KXAN) – Atmospheric rivers have been stealing the headlines over the past several months as California has experienced a relentless amount of rain and snow. An atmospheric river is a narrow corridor of concentrated moisture or water vapor in the atmosphere. They can stretch hundreds to even thousands of miles in length while usually being much narrower in width (less than 500 miles or so). As this water vapor gets pushed up the mountains along the West Coast, this moisture is forced upwards creating cooling, condensation and a continuous torrential train of falling heavy precipitation. The faster the atmospheric river, the more intense these precipitation rates can be.The Sierra Nevada mountains supply nearly a third of California’s water supply. Suspect involved in Rotterdam shooting sentenced to 27 months ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- On Thursday, Cameron Robinson, 25, of Grover, North Carolina, was sentenced to 27 months in prison. As part of his guilty plea, Robinson admitted to having a Taurus Model G2C 9 mm semi-automatic pistol on May 4, 2022, in Rotterdam. Another individual used that gun to shoot Robinson that morning. Officers remain in hospital after St. Louis County crash ST. LOUIS -- A Maryland Heights crash sent several police officers and a K-9 to hospital early Wednesday morning. Three officers remain in the hospital and two of them may be released next week.The officers were reportedly hit at about 1:42 a.m. while working a St. Charles County stolen car task force case, that ended up near Interstate 70 and Highway 141. Matthew C. Jones, 31, missed his exit to get onto St. Charles Main Street and instead plowed into a pile of cars and people on the other side of the bridge. CBI investigating fatal Monte Vista police shooting of teen who ran at them swinging knives Colorado Bureau of Investigation officials have identified two Monte Vista police officers who shot and killed an 18-year-old after he ran at them while swinging two knives.The police had received 911 calls on March 21 and went to a house in town where they encountered the young man, who jumped out of a window while holding two knives, and then ran at the officers, swinging the blades and “barely missing the officers”.Monte Vista police Cpl. David Pino used a Taser to try to subdue the 18-year-old, and Sgt. Michael Martinez then fired his handgun, according to an update report from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.“While retreating backward from the attack, Cpl. Pino fell to the ground and then fired his handgun,” the report said.The 18-year-old was declared dead at the scene. He hasn’t been identified by the coroner’s office.Pino suffered minor injuries.
