A new pop-up slush stand recently opened in Wakefield, working to provide employment opportunities for people living with disabilities. Known as INspire Cafe, the stand on Main Street is running in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wakefield and Stoneham. “INspire Cafe is not only a mission to show people what our employees can do and that they are employable, but to show our employees the value in themselves,” said INspire’s Tara Kelly. Many of those now working at INspire Cafe previously worked at Bitty & Beau’s, a coffee shop in Melrose that had to shut its doors earlier this year. When Bitty & Beau’s closed, employees were left without a job. “A group of families decided that was just too much of a positive experience that we could not let that go,” said Marie Rej, a co-chair of the Friends of INspire Cafe Board of Directors. “So, we are here recreating it.”Organizers said they’ve seen crowds of people enjoying what INspire has to offer s...Firefighters battle house fire in Marlborough

BALTIMORE — The trade deadline helped the Mets infuse the farm system with talent at all levels. Talent evaluators have been generally positive about the haul general manager Billy Eppler got back for David Robertson, Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Mark Canha, Tommy Pham, Dominic Leone and even Eduardo Escobar way back in June when the Mets traded him to the Los Angeles Angels for two pitching prospects. The Mets used their best resource — money — to get better prospect returns at every level from rookie ball to Triple-A. Infielder Luisangel Acuña is the star of the prospect group, but the Mets are content to let him continue his development for a few more years. The first one to be called up might be right-hander Justin Jarvis, the pitcher the Mets received from the Milwaukee Brewers in the trade for Canha. The 23-year-old finally gives the Mets some much-needed pitching depth at the upper levels of the organization. Garrett Whitlock took a key step forward on Saturday, facing hitters in a multi-inning live batting practice.“I think it was good,” Alex Cora said. “(Velocity) was up, the shape of the pitches were good.”This is the second injured list stint of the year for the 27-year-old right-handler, who last pitched on July 10. As he prepares to begin a rehab assignment, The organization’s resolve to keep him in the rotation seems to be softening.Whitlock was a member of the Boston bullpen for his entire stellar rookie season in 2021, when he finished the season with a 1.96 ERA across 46 appearances, including 11 games finished and a pair of saves. Over 73 1/3 innings, he struck out 81 batters, issued 17 walks, and only gave up 16 earned runs.Last season, the Red Sox attempted to transition Whitlock into the rotation, as he’d worked his way up the minor leagues as a starting pitcher. They moved him from the bullpen in late April, then returned him to the bullpen in July. Hip surgery ended his s...Yankees Notebook: Jake Bauers part of first-base solution in Anthony Rizzo’s absence

Less than two weeks after his Bronx Bombers debut, Jake Bauers crushed an opposite-field home run into the Yankee Stadium bullpen beyond the wall in left-center — a rare feat for a left-handed hitter. That 420-foot blast on May 9 captured the attention of Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who has continued to lean more and more on the 27-year-old journeyman in the months since.Originally called up in late April to help fill the Yankees’ left-field void, Bauers recently returned to his original position of first base in the sudden absence of Anthony Rizzo, who is out indefinitely with post-concussion syndrome. Saturday’s game against the Houston Astros marked Bauers’ third consecutive start at first after Rizzo went on the injured list Thursday.“He’s been really good,” Boone said Saturday of Bauers. “Kind of been a revelation for us, and I think a very interesting player moving forward.”“I didn’t necessarily see this coming,...Motorcyclist collides with driver making U-turn: police
