An excessive heat warning is in effect for much of the interior areas of Southern California through Monday evening, and now some coastal communities are finding themselves under a heat advisory. In addition to the triple digit temperatures, winds are expected to pick up on Saturday afternoon, with gusts of up to 25 miles per hour in some parts of Los Angeles and upwards of 40 miles per hour in mountain areas. “We are going to see elevated fire danger for the interior sections because of the wind, the triple digits and the low relative humidity,” said KTLA 5 Meteorologist Kacey Montoya. PLAQUEMINE, La. (AP) — A fire at a Louisiana chemical plant triggered explosions that shook homes several miles away and sent flames and smoke billowing into the air, prompting emergency officials to urge a few hundred nearby residents to shelter indoors for several hours and to turn off their air conditioners.Flames erupted late Friday at Dow Chemical’s plant on the Mississippi River near Plaquemine, south of Baton Rouge. Iberville Parish officials told The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate that the fire started in an area of the plant that handles ethylene oxide, a flammable and toxic chemical. The parish’s sheriff, Bret Stassi, said no one was injured and that the company had accounted for all its workers. Residents of roughly 350 households within a half-mile (0.80 kilometers) of the plant were told to shelter inside for several hours overnight. As Dow Chemical and environmental officials monitored the air for hazardous materials, emergency officials urged shel...A new look at an old clue helps investigators arrest the man accused of Gilgo Beach murders

MASSAPEQUA PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The first find was startling: a woman’s skeletal remains cast into the dunes along a remote Long Island highway. Then came the shock. Days after that discovery in December 2010, police discovered parts of three more women nearby on a spit of sand known as Gilgo Beach. The remains of seven other people were found along several miles of the same parkway during the next few months. An 11th person, whose disappearance had spurred the initial search, was found dead by the highway in December 2011.What became known as the Gilgo Beach murders — the victims mostly young women who had been sex workers — flummoxed investigators for over a dozen years. The case endured through five police commissioners, more than 1,000 tips, countless theories and supposed conspiracies. Then a fresh review last year tied an old clue, about a pickup truck linked to a victim’s disappearance, to a new name: Rex A. Heuermann.Energized by the truck tidbit, investigators charted the call...BRITISH OPEN ’23: Facts and figures for the 151st Open
