KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Voting began Saturday in crucial state elections in Malaysia, where Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s multi-coalition government is seeking to strengthen its hold against a strong Islamic opposition.Queues formed outside schools and other polling stations as voters began to stream in. Nearly 9.8 million people, or about half the country’s electorate, are eligible to elect 245 assembly members in six states that contribute more than half of Malaysia’s gross domestic product. The polls are widely viewed as an early referendum both for Anwar’s leadership and also the strength of the Islamist opposition after a divisive general election in November. While the local elections have no direct impact on the federal government, the outcome could signal whether Anwar’s government can last a full five-year term. The two contending coalitions currently control three states each. If the opposition takes control of states led by Anwar’s bloc or otherwise has a strong sh...Colombia prosecutors confirm arrest of father of 2 of the 4 children lost 40 days in Amazon jungle

NEW YORK — About 49,500 people took their own lives last year in the U.S., the highest number ever, according to new government data posted Thursday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which posted the numbers, has not yet calculated a suicide rate for the year, but available data suggests suicides are more common in the U.S. than at any time since the dawn of World War II.“There’s something wrong. The number should not be going up,” said Christina Wilbur, a 45-year-old Florida woman whose son shot himself to death last year.“My son should not have died,” she said. “I know it’s complicated, I really do. But we have to be able to do something. Something that we’re not doing. Because whatever we’re doing right now is not helping.”Experts caution that suicide is complicated, and that recent increases might be driven by a range of factors, including higher rates of depression and limited availability of mental health services. But a main driver is the growing availabili...Driver killed in two-vehicle crash in San Jose

By Jan M. Olsen | Associated PressCOPENHAGEN, Denmark — Authorities were on standby to evacuate more people in southeastern Norway Friday, where huge amounts of water, littered with broken trees, debris and trash, were thundering down the usually serene rivers after days of torrential rain. The level of water in swollen rivers and lakes continued to grow despite two days of dry but overcast weather, with houses abandoned in flooded areas, floating hay bales wrapped in white plastic, cars coated in mud and camping sites swamped. In the Bagdammen lake, a helicopter with a net and cables attached was used to push a caravan toward the shore where it was pulled in by firefighters. One of the most affected places was the town of Hoenefossen where the Begna river had gone over its banks and authorities were considering moving more people downstream for fear of landslides. A total of 3,600 people are estimated to have been already evacuated, the Norwegian news agency NTB said.“We constan...Contra Costa DA attempts to block publicization of new racist texts by Antioch cops

MARTINEZ — The Contra Costa District Attorney has uncovered even more racist text messages by Antioch officers that are set to be turned over to defense lawyers after a judge struck down a last-minute DA attempt to limit their publicization. In a court document filed Thursday, Chief Assistant District Attorney Simon O’Connell wrote that his office has identified 225 pages worth of never-before-seen racist texts by Antioch officers Morteza Amiri and Andrea Rodriguez, both of whom are under criminal investigation by the FBI. His failed motion argued that should the material be publicized in the media, it “increases the risk of piggybacking and the potential for further harm.”O’Connell asked for a protective order prohibiting the dissemination of materials to the media.Judge David Goldstein rejected the motion without hearing defense objections to it, noting the DA’s office failed to cite any legal opinions that would allow him to grant it. His ruling clear...Latest news
