PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Cambodia’s National Election Committee refused on Monday to register the opposition Candlelight Party, the sole credible challenger to the governing Cambodian People’s Party, for July elections, saying it had failed to provide necessary documents. The ruling leaves the party only a very slim chance of taking part in the elections by filing a successful appeal to the Constitutional Council.Kimsour Phirith, a spokesperson for the Candlelight Party, said it will file an official complaint asking the council to judge the election commission’s ruling. He pointed out that the party has been operating legally and participated in last year’s local elections without the issue being raised. In those polls, the Cambodian People’s Party won 74.3% of the votes and the Candlelight Party about 22.3%.Kimsour Phirith said when the party applied to contest this year’s elections, the election commission asked for its original registration papers issued by the Interior M...Alcaraz’s 12-match winning streak ends with loss to qualifier at Italian Open

ROME (AP) — Carlo Alcaraz’s 12-match winning streak came to an unexpected end when he was beaten by 135th-ranked Hungarian qualifier Fabian Marozsan 6-3, 7-6 (4) Monday in the third round of the Italian Open.Alcaraz had won consecutive clay-court titles in Barcelona and Madrid and secured a return to the No. 1 ranking by winning the opening match of his Rome debut. But the 20-year-old Spaniard appeared surprised by how Marozsan dictated with spectacular play all over the court, including a series of drop shots that Alcaraz had no answer for.The result means that Alcaraz will go into the French Open — which starts in less two weeks and where he will be the top seed — coming off a dispiriting defeat. It was only the second loss on clay for Alcaraz this year after getting beaten by Cameron Norrie in the Rio de Janeiro final in February.Making matters even more surprising was that this is the first time Marozsan is playing in the main draw of an ATP tournament.___Andrew Dampf is at https...SuperCom: Q1 Earnings Snapshot

KEY LARGO, Fla. (AP) — A university professor broke a record for the longest time living underwater without depressurization this weekend at a Florida Keys lodge for scuba divers.Joseph Dituri’s 74th day residing in Jules’ Undersea Lodge, situated at the bottom of a 30-foot-deep lagoon in Key Largo, wasn’t much different than his previous days there since he submerged March 1.Dituri, who also goes by the moniker “Dr. Deep Sea,” ate a protein-heavy meal of eggs and salmon prepared using a microwave, exercised with resistance bands, did his daily pushups and took an hour-long nap. Unlike a submarine, the lodge does not use technology to adjust for the increased underwater pressure. The previous record of 73 days, two hours and 34 minutes was set by two Tennessee professors — Bruce Cantrell and Jessica Fain — at the same location in 2014.But Dituri isn’t just settling for the record and resurfacing: He plans to stay at the lodge until June 9, when he reaches 100 days a...R U 4 Eel? Three people were arrested in Belgium in a probe into a trafficking network smuggling glass eels into Asia, the Belgian ministry for public health, safety of the food chain and the environment said Monday in a statement.150 kilos of glass eels, which are considered a delicacy in some Asian countries, were seized. The Belgian bust was part of a wider operation in France, Spain and Poland, in which 27 people were arrested in total and “deals a serious blow to the trafficking of this regulated species,” the French police said in a statement. The EU banned the export of glass eels, which are threatened with extinction, in 2010. But the demand remains high in Asia, where these can be sold for more than €5,000 a kilogram on the black market — compared with around €800 in Europe.Investigators estimated that the European trafficking ring was responsible for exporting more than 4 metric tons of glass eels to Asia between 2021 and 2023, making over €1.1 million in profit, the French...Latest news
