Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey is sounding off against the harassment of witnesses in the ongoing, high-profile murder case involving a woman accused of killing her boyfriend, a Boston police officer, last year. In a video statement posted online, Morrisey said of the witnesses, “To have them accused of murder is outrageous. To have them harassed and intimidated based on false narratives and accusations is wrong. They are witnesses doing what our justice systems asks of them.”“We try people in the court and not on the internet for a reason,” he continued. “The internet has no rules of evidence. The internet has no punishment for perjury and the internet does not know all the facts.” Prosecutors have said Karen Read ran over her boyfriend, John OâKeefe, with her SUV in January, 2022 after a night of drinking. Read, prosecutors said, then left the scene. She maintains her innocence and says he was attacked by a...Environmental police monitoring area in Kingston after bear shot for attacking goat

Drew Smyly is maintaining his humor through the disappointment of being moved back to the Chicago Cubs bullpen. The 24-year-old left-hander made three relief appearances before Marcus Stroman’s injury prompted the Cubs to return Smyly to the rotation. They saw enough in one start, a disastrous outing Tuesday in Detroit, to move Smyly back to the pen and look at other options for the fifth starter spot.“It’s like I never left, I guess,” Smyly said Friday at PNC Park. “I mean, I get it. I haven’t been doing my job as a starter, so there’s nothing I can say or any type of way I can feel about it. I wish I was doing better. I wish I had things figured out, where to go to correct it.”Manager David Ross declined to announce pregame Friday who will take Smyly’s start, which is listed as TBD for Sunday’s series finale. With three open spots on the 40-man roster, the Cubs have flexibility to add someone from Triple-A Iowa. Left-hande...Gerrit Cole, DJ LeMahieu power Yankees past Rays in series opener

TAMPA — The last time Gerrit Cole pitched at Tropicana Field, his start went from a gem to a disaster in the blink of an eye. That came on May 7 of this year. The Yankees blew a 6-0 lead with their ace on the mound that day and ultimately lost, 8-7, in 10 innings. Cole, who had cruised through the first four frames before running into trouble in the fifth and sixth, gave up six runs, five of which were earned. The loss was one of the Yankees’ worst in a season that has since been filled with worthy candidates. But Cole has mostly been a silver lining for the last-place Yankees, and a Friday return to The Trop saw the Cy Young contender stay true to form in a 6-2 win for the Yankees. The righty lasted 7.2 innings in the series-opener while tallying four hits, two earned runs, zero walks, 11 strikeouts and 100 pitches before exiting to an ovation on the road. In doing so, Cole lowered his ERA to an even 3.00.The Rays’ first run off Cole came in the sixth when Yandy D...1 stabbed outside of post office in North County
