“I’ll tell you what annoys me most,” Cy the Cynic said to me in the club lounge.“If you must,” I sighed.“It’s when my opponent assumes I’ve made a mistake or will do so,” Cy said. “And then, he turns out to be right!”Cy was today’s West in a penny game. After East opened one heart, North-South bid to four spades, their best chance to score game. Presumably, East would have led the king of clubs against 3NT by North, and Cy would have kept his four spades against five diamonds by South.Cy did well to lead a club against four spades. With a heart lead, South could take the ace, take three high trumps and start the diamonds, losing a trump and two clubs. But when East led three rounds of clubs, South had to ruff and was threatened with loss of control.“He cashed the A-K of trumps, not best” Cy told me, “and then led diamonds. On the third diamond, I ruffed and led a heart. South won, drew my last ...Fowler, McIlroy, Scheffler headline final round in a US Open full of possibilities

LOS ANGELES (AP) — At the top of the U.S. Open leaderboard there are two players each going for their first major title. That’s about all they have in common. Rickie Fowler has contended in majors, won nine tournaments across the globe and has long been one of golf’s most recognizable players. Wyndham Clark is playing in only his seventh major and, no matter how he plays Sunday, this will mark the first time he’s finished better than 75th.“It’s a little surreal to be in this situation,” Clark said. In a way, the player one shot behind them, Rory McIlroy, feels the same. He is trying to break a nine-year drought without a major. He starts the day one shot behind the leaders. Does the fact he’s won four of these, including the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional, give him an edge? “I don’t know,” he said. “It’s been such a long time since I’ve done it.”McIlroy is paired with Scottie Scheffler, who trails the leaders by three. With a win, he would join Tiger W...DC Mayor Bowser’s former top adviser sexually harassed city employee, probe finds

An investigation has found former D.C. deputy mayor John Falcicchio sexually harassed a female employee, according to a summary of findings released Saturday night. In the report, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Office of Legal Counsel concluded allegations against Falcicchio lodged by an employee working in the planning and economic development office more than likely constituted sexual harassment. The document said the office’s sexual harassment officer started the investigation on March 10, just over a week before Bowser’s former top adviser announced an unexpected resignation.By May 11, that officer completed 32 interviews with 21 people who were current and former city employees or may have had knowledge related to allegations. According to the document, three interviews occurred with the employee who first filed a complaint. The investigator also reviewed “thousands of emails and other communications, including screenshot messages.”Falcicchio declined to ...Police searching for evidence at Malden apartment complex

7Weather – Our weekend will end better than it started! That’s good timing for your outdoor Father’s Day plans today. A few showers pop up today with near-normal temperatures. Looking ahead, there are afternoon thunderstorms the next couple of days then temperatures head to near 90°.The upper level low that brought downpours and touched off some thunderstorms yesterday continues to move farther away. On the backside of it, we’ll continue to get a few showers rotating in this morning with some pop up showers this afternoon. A northwest wind will help to dry out the air column allowing more breaks of sun to develop the farther west you go. Highs today will be in the low 70s inland. Less wind this afternoon will allow sea breezes to develop along the coast. The onshore breeze along with clouds will keep temperatures there in the 60s.Fewer clouds overnight with a calm wind. That’ll allow temperatures to drop into the 50s. Patchy fog will develop in the usua...Damaged portion of I-95 in Philadelphia will be reopened within two weeks, governor says

(CNN) — The damaged section of Interstate 95 that collapsed in Philadelphia will be reopened within the next two weeks, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said Saturday. The interstate crumbled June 11 after a tanker truck carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline crashed and exploded in flames under the highway, officials said. The driver, identified as Nathan Moody, 53, was killed.“I can tell you now, I can state with confidence, that we will have I-95 reopened within the next two weeks,” Shapiro said, speaking alongside President Joe Biden following the president’s aerial tour of the highway collapse.“We are going to get traffic moving again, thanks to the extraordinary work that is going on here by these union trade workers,” he added. “These are special people working their tails off, and Mr. President, they are working 24/7 literally around the clock.”Demolition work on the collapsed section of I-95 was completed Thursday. Rob Schwartz stumbled upon the forgotten manuscripts of his late father, Morrie Schwartz. Now, he wants to honor his father’s legacy by publishing his words.Morrie was the subject of the best-selling book “Tuesdays with Morrie.” The book was written by one of Morrie’s students at Brandeis University, who visited Morrie during his final days battling ALS.His son is remembering his father by posthumously publishing his book “The Wisdom of Morrie: Living and Aging Creatively and Joyfully.”“When I rediscovered the manuscript in the early 2000s I thought it really had a lot of very valuable insights,” Rob said.Morrie wrote the book from 1988 to 1992 before he was diagnosed with ALS, but the disease prevented him from ever pursuing publishing.“It’s very prescient, I mean he discusses stuff in the book that we’re just starting to discuss now — ageism, how pernicious ageism is, how elderly people have a great role to play in our society,” Rob said.Rob said the ...Projections indicate Swiss approve climate bill as Alpine nation’s glaciers succumb to warming

BERLIN (AP) — A majority of Swiss citizens on Sunday voted in favor of a bill aimed at introducing new climate measures to sharply curb the rich Alpine nation’s greenhouse gas emissions, first projections indicated.Projections by the GFS Bern Institute based on early vote counting and released by public broadcaster SRF showed that 58% of voters were in favor of the bill. The margin of error was 3%, SRF reported. It was not clear how many of the votes had already been voted.Exact results are expected later in the day.The referendum was sparked by a campaign by scientists and environmentalists to save Switzerland’s iconic glaciers, which are melting away at an alarming rate. Campaigners initially proposed even more ambitious measures but later backed a government plan that requires Switzerland to achieve “net zero” emissions by 2050. It also sets aside more than 3 billion Swiss francs ($3.357 billion) to help wean companies and homeowners off fossil fuels. The nationalist S...Nearly 100 die as India struggles with a sweltering heatwave in 2 most populous states

In a 2024 Republican presidential field full of long-shot candidates, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez may be — on paper anyway — the longest long shot of all. No sitting mayor has ever been elected U.S. president, a job that historically has been won by governors, vice presidents, senators or Cabinet secretaries. Some former mayors have become commander in chief, but only after serving in higher-profile positions. None of that has deterred Suarez, who announced his campaign this past week by talking up his experience leading the city of about 450,000 residents. Being a two-term mayor of Miami, he said, has helped him understand and confront issues facing most Americans, such as crime and homelessness. In the video for his kickoff, Suarez went for a run past his childhood home and his high school and spoke of his record of cutting taxes and expanding Miami’s technology economy. “In Miami, we stopped waiting for Washington to lead,” Suarez said. The 45-year-old corporate and real est...Latest news
