By ANDREW DALTON (AP Entertainment Writer)LOS ANGELES (AP) — HBO dominated Wednesday morning’s Emmy nominations, with the elite trio of “ Succession,” “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us” combining for a whopping 74, but the dominant theme darkening the scene is the ongoing writers strike and the looming possibility that actors may join them in as little as a day.“Succession” and its deeply dysfunctional dynasty of one-percenters led all Emmy nominees in its fourth and final season with 27, including best drama, which it has won two of the past three years. It got three nominations for best actor in a drama, with Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin all getting nods for playing men of the Roy clan, and Sarah Snook getting a best actress nomination. It also got four nominations for best supporting actor in a drama. The cursed vacationers at a Sicilian resort from the second of “The White Lotus” truly domin...‘Succession’ and ‘The Last of Us’ lead Emmy nominations

The Cowboy Junkies have one of the best music catalogs of the last 40 years, filled with more a dozen studio albums that have only grown more intriguing and impressive over time. The Canadian band remains best-known for the 1988 major-label debut “The Trinity Session,” a lo-fi gem that mixes country, rock, folk and pop in ways that absolutely astound, and includes the album’s signature cover of Lou Reed’s “Sweet Jane.”The Junkies went on to release a number of popular offerings in the ‘90s — including “Caution Horses” and “Lay It Down” — but then began to fade from the public’s eye as they rolled into the new millennium. That did not, however, stop them from putting out great music. Indeed, their post-‘90s material — from 2001’s “Open” to 2007’s “At the End of Paths Taken” to 2018’s “All That Reckoning” — have arguably been the strongest of their entire career. The run of amazing artistic success continues with the band’s newly released full-length album “Such F...Inflation cools off further in Bay Area as consumer prices ease

Consumer prices in the Bay Area rose at a much slower pace in June than in prior periods, a sign that the brutally high inflation rate of the last two years has begun to cool off — finally — the government reported Wednesday. The Bay Area cost of living rose 2.9% in June on a yearly basis, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. That was the smallest annual increase for the region’s inflation rate in more than two years. In February 2021, consumer prices rose 1.6% on a yearly basis. The peak for the current bout of sky-high consumer prices appears to have occurred in June 2022, when the Bay Area inflation rate skyrocketed by 6.8%.Since then, the successive reports for the inflation rate in the Bay Area showed an overall trend for steadily smaller annual increases in the pace of inflation. But there’s one key caveat to assessing the June pace of inflation. The current price levels are still far higher than in recent years. Two examples: June’s consumer ...Space Force sergeant jailed on murder charge after chasing and shooting teens, police say

Ted Williams once suggested that, “They invented the All-Star Game for Willie Mays.”The former Boston Red Sox slugger, who also is on the shortlist with the Giants icon of the greatest baseball players of all time, might have been on to something. It’s been 50 years since Mays made his final All-Star appearance as a New York Met at Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium. But as the cream of the crop of current stars assembled in Seattle on Tuesday night, it was a reminder that no one will likely come close to the Say-Hey Kid’s impact on the Mid-Summer Classic.Mays is all over the All-Star Game record books. And most of his marks will never be matched. Many won’t come close to being threatened. One of Mays’ most impressive All-Star achievements – 24 selections during his 22 seasons in the majors – isn’t even a record. Hank Aaron played in 25, and Stan Musial also played in 24.MLB held two All-Star games per season from 1959-62, and it wasn’t uncommon for the biggest stars to play most or...San Mateo County supports Gov. Firefighters discovered cracks in structures and the ground, and hastily evacuated residents from 12 homes that were red-tagged as unsafe.Ten of those homes were then dramatically torn apart over several days as they slid down a slope into an adjacent canyon.Mayor Britt Huff said measurements late Tuesday afternoon marked the first time earth movement had slowed to a point where “it may be maxed out.”The City Council voted Tuesday night to declare a local emergency, a step that allows the city to request funds from the state Office of Em...Latest news
