BERLIN — German Economy Minister and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck has warned that green goals are not being met and said that support for climate protection appears to be wavering.“No bullshit: We are not on track, it has to be said quite clearly,” Habeck, of the Green Party that is a member of the governing coalition, said Wednesday at the re:publica conference in Berlin. After praising the German government’s expansion of renewable energy, Habeck said that even if all current measures now being planned are implemented, it would not be possible to stay below the lower 1.5-degree warming limit of the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change.Habeck emphasized that politics alone cannot fix climate issues; “We started far too late for that.” He said that while the government must “really pull through politically now,” it must also work to ensure popular support for the policies.“It has to be said […] that we are just perhaps moving away from a social majority f...Russia bombs school where flood evacuees were sheltering after Zelenskyy visits Kherson

KYIV — Russia unleashed a barrage of missiles on the Ukrainian-held parts of Kherson on Thursday, with eyewitnesses reporting multiple casualties at a school where flood evacuees who fled the rising waters of the Dnipro River were sheltering. The shelling came just after Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited a crossing point where people were being evacuated from flooded areas and called for “a clear and quick global response” to Tuesday’s bombing of the Nova Kakhovka dam, which Kyiv and its allies say the Kremlin orchestrated.“Orcs have just fired at School No. 2 where people from flooded homes were gathering,” said Yevhen Rischuk, the Ukrainian mayor-in-exile of the occupied town of Oleshky, which has been hit hard by the floodwaters. “Orcs” is the nickname Ukrainians use for Russian forces.According to multiple eyewitnesses, the shelling targeting major evacuation routes from the city of Kherson, which Ukraine recaptured from Russia...Why Matt Mervis and Christopher Morel are in tough spots as Chicago Cubs try to get their anemic offense on track

Chicago Cubs first baseman Matt Mervis got the pitch he wanted. He worked a 2-0 count against Los Angeles Angels starter Jaime Barria in the fifth inning Wednesday when a slider from the right-hander caught too much of the zone. Mervis smoked the ball, pulling it to right field with the hardest-hit ball — 110.1 mph — any player either team produced in the game.Mervis, though, had nothing to show for the great contact.Despite the .750 expected batting average on the 300-foot line drive, Angels right fielder Mickey Moniak hauled it in to keep the runner at first. The frustrating sequence epitomized the struggles Mervis has experienced through his first 22 major-league games and, more broadly, the Cubs’ maddening offensive inconsistency.Mervis finished 0-for-3 with a strikeout in the Cubs’ 6-2 loss. He hasn’t been able to get going since the Cubs promoted him May 5 after he conquered Triple-A pitching in the first month of the season.Manager David Ross has ...Five years later, Billy McKinney gets second chance with Yankees: ‘Earned the opportunity’
