Former Italy PM alleges France downed passenger jet in bid to kill Gaddafi An explosive and unsubstantiated allegation that Paris gave the order to shoot down an Italian passenger jet in a bid to kill Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 1980 risks sparking a diplomatic row between Italy and France. In an interview with Rome daily la Repubblica published on Saturday, former Italian Prime Minister Giuliano Amato claimed that the French air force inadvertently fired a missile that downed Itavia Flight 870 en route from Bologna to Palermo. The crash over the Mediterranean killed all 81 people on board and led to rampant speculation in Italy about the cause.“A plan had been launched to hit the plane on which Gaddafi was flying,” Amato claimed in the interview, suggesting the strongman ruler was tipped off by Amato’s own former rival, ex-Prime Minister Bettino Craxi. Amato called on French President Emmanuel Macron to respond to the claim, saying “it would be an opportunity for the Élysée to wash away the shame that weighs on Paris.”I...

Low water levels reveal dinosaur tracks dating back 110 million years (CNN) — As Texas baked in record-breaking heat this summer and a growing drought pushed water levels down, a group of volunteers uncovered something sort of magnificent: new giant dinosaur tracks that are believed to be from around 110 million years ago.Paul Baker, the retail manager at Dinosaur Valley State Park, told CNN he has “never seen this many dinosaur tracks” before.“It’s exciting to see something that nobody else has seen; it’s almost like a treasure hunt, in a way,” said Baker, who helps clean up and map dinosaur tracks at the park. “I thought I’d seen every dinosaur track there is, but within the last two years with the droughts we’ve had and the hard work by our volunteers, it’s just an amazing sight.”Dinosaur Valley State Park, around an hour and a half south of Dallas, is home to a large number of dinosaur tracks imprinted by sauropods and theropods that lived in the area roughly 113 million years ago. Hurricane Idalia looters arrested as residents worry about more burglaries HORSESHOE BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Two people were charged with looting a home damaged by Hurricane Idalia in Florida’s Big Bend region, as residents’ concerns grew that burglars could be tempted to hit other hurricane-ravaged homes since law enforcement is stretched thin in the remote, wooded area along the Gulf Coast. Some residents of Horseshoe Beach, Florida, one of the communities hardest hit after Idalia made landfall Wednesday as a Category 3 hurricane, urged law enforcement to set up checkpoints where people would have to show identification in order to get into the town.Marina worker Kerry Ford had high praise for local law enforcement’s response to the hurricane but wished more would be done to keep out people who don’t belong in Horseshoe Beach. The authorities “did really good,” Ford said. “Now, the only thing I’ve seen where they’ve dropped the ball is you can come right into Horseshoe without showing you’re a resident or anything like that. How gas prices have changed in Illinois in the last week (Stacker) -- Gas prices nationwide are near record highs as Americans gear up for the Labor Day weekend. Extreme weather and cuts to oil production from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries are both factors pushing prices up.U.S. oil inventories also remain lower than the pre-pandemic average. Analysts have warned that higher gasoline prices could stoke inflation once again and force consumers to cut back on spending to the detriment of the economy and stock market. In Northeastern states, AAA said its own survey has revealed that drivers plan to cut back this year in light of higher prices for gas."The concession that's being made is the distance that's being traveled," AAA's Robert Sinclair Jr. told Yahoo News this week.Stacker compiled statistics on gas prices in Illinois.
