Admission Day: California admitted to United States 173 years ago  Happy 173rd birthday, California! On Sept. 9, 1850, California became the 31st state to be admitted to the Union after the Compromise of 1850 was signed by then-President Millard Fillmore. California became a state relatively quickly, as the Gold Rush that started in 1848 – just days after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed between the U.S. and Mexico, which ceded most of the Southwest and all of present-day California to the states – led to an influx of settlers, and a hasty constitutional convention was held the following year.  It was at this convention that the state seal that we all know today was created. The seal features 31 stars, symbolizing California’s admission as the 31st state, as well as the Greek goddess Athena, a grizzly bear feeding on grape vines and the state motto “Eureka.”  A seal for the state of California is shown on the Governor Edmund G. Pat Brown Building, which includes the headquarters for the California Public Utilities Comm...

No. 25 Clemson, QB Klubnik bounce back to roll past FCS foe Charleston Southern 66-17. CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Cade Klubnik threw for a career-high 315 yards and four touchdowns as he and No. 25 Clemson rallied from a mistake-filled first half to roll past Charleston Southern 66-17 on Saturday. Antonio Williams had touchdown grabs of 10 and 5 yards while Phil Mafah ran for two short touchdowns as the Tigers (1-1) improved to 38-0 all-time against teams from the Football Championship Subdivision. The Tigers and their sophomore passer bounced back from an opening-week meltdown, losing 28-7 at No. 21 Duke. But miscues and poor execution from that game were on display the first two quarters here. A fumble by Klubnik deep in Clemson territory led to Charleston Southern’s first touchdown. A series later, Klubnik’s throwaway was picked off by cornerback Leon Thomas, who went 67 yards for a score to put the Buccaneers (1-1) up 14-7 before a stunned Death Valley crowd. Clemson didn’t restore order until after halftime with four third-quarter touchdowns — three o...

No. 1 Georgia intercepts three passes in 45-3 rout of Ball State ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — No. 1 Georgia intercepted three passes and walk-on Mekhi Mews sparked the offense with a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown, leading the slow-starting Bulldogs to a 45-3 victory over Ball State on Saturday. The two-time reigning national champions were held scoreless in the opening quarter, but Georgia (2-0) finally got rolling with a 31-point outburst in the second period against the overmatched Cardinals (0-2).The 5-foot-8 Mews, quickly becoming one of Georgia’s most exciting weapons, took a punt at his own 31, shook off a couple of would-be tacklers, weaved past another defender and found a wall of blockers down the sideline.Mews also had a 47-yard kickoff return to start the game, but Georgia botched that opportunity when Peyton Woodring missed a chip-shot field goal from 28 yards. There was a bit of grumbling in the stands when Georgia’s offense, led by new starting quarterback Carson Beck, began sluggishly for the second week in a row.No. 5 OHIO STATE 35, YOU...

The first Rugby World Cup red card goes to England. No surprise MARSEILLE, France (AP) — The first red card of the Rugby World Cup was issued to England. No surprise there.Flanker Tom Curry was sent off on Saturday less than three minutes into the pool match against Argentina in Marseille. He was too upright tackling Pumas fullback Juan Cruz Mallia, who was coming down from a leaping catch. They collided heads, and referee Mathieu Raynal initially yellow-carded Curry. But the yellow was upgraded to red after a bunker review because Curry had clear line of sight on Mallia and no mitigation.Curry became the first England player to be sent off at a men’s World Cup, and the fourth England player to be red-carded this year.England used Curry’s absence as inspiration to beat Argentina 27-10 in a stunning turnaround on form. But Curry is set to appear before a judiciary and faces missing World Cup games.England’s tackling technique has been a bane for coach Steve Borthwick.Dangerous tackles in the warmup matches landed captain Owen Farre...

Minjee Lee storms to 2-shot LPGA lead in Cincinnati CINCINNATI (AP) — Two-time major champion Minjee Lee opened with three straight birdies, made up a six-shot deficit at the turn and posted a 7-under 65 on Saturday to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Kroger Queen City Championship.Lee played bogey-free on a Kenwood Country Club course that was so firm that even some shots with wedge had a hard time staying on the greens. She leaned on her putter, closing out her round with a 12-foot par save. That gave her a two-shot lead over Charley Hull of England and Peiyun Chien of Taiwan, who rallied from a rough start to get back to even par for the day only to go long over the 18th green and miss a 5-foot par putt.Hull bounced back from a triple bogey to start the third round with seven birdies, posting a 68 that gets her in the final group. Germany routed 4-1 by Japan in friendly as pressure mounts on coach Hansi Flick

Germany routed 4-1 by Japan in friendly as pressure mounts on coach Hansi Flick WOLFSBURG, Germany (AP) — Germany was jeered by its home crowd Saturday after slumping to a 4-1 loss to Japan to pile yet more pressure on coach Hansi Flick, nine months out from hosting the European Championship. The German defence allowed Japan a string of chances on the counter and the result highlights the lack of progress since a 2-1 loss to Japan played a key role in Germany going out of last year’s World Cup in the group stage. Flick’s team has not won any of its last five games and conceded 13 goals in that time.“At some point, expectations and reality are so far apart that you have to accept that currently you aren’t good enough,” Germany captain Ilkay Gündoğan told broadcaster RTL. “Perhaps we also think that we are better than we really are.” Flick said he believes he is still the right coach for Germany and he was supported by Gündoğan, who said he still trusts him. Another challenge comes Tuesday with a friendly against World Cup runner-up F...

(AP) — Audric Estime ran for an 80-yard touchdown on the first play after an extended weather delay and Sam Hartman threw for four scores to help No. 10 Notre Dame beat North Carolina State 45-24 on Saturday.Estime ran for 134 yards and two scores, including a 7-yard run through traffic with 10:42 left that put the Fighting Irish (3-0) in firm control. Notre Dame has now won 29 straight regular-season matchups against Atlantic Coast Conference teams in its scheduling partnership with the conference as a football independent but a member in all other league sports. For Hartman, the sixth-year passer who transferred from Wake Forest, it was a familiar foe, too. The Demon Deacons were every-year instate opponents for the Wolfpack in the ACC’s former divisional format, and Hartman was 0-2 in Raleigh — including last November while taking four sacks. This time, Hartman’s team played from in front the entire way, and he threw for three scores after halftime as the ...
