The Rockies’ reeling rotation took another hit Sunday when the club placed rookie right-hander Noah Davis on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. The severity of the injury is unknown at this point.Davis’ injury is the latest blow for a beat-up rotation that has a 6.27 ERA, the third-highest in the majors. Only Oakland (8.68) and Boston (6.27) have been worse. Colorado entered the season with incredibly thin depth at starting pitcher and now it’s paying the price.Davis, 25, got rocked by the Diamondbacks Saturday night, giving up seven runs on seven hits in just two innings in Colorado’s 11-4 loss.Davis entered the game with a 0.93 ERA, the lowest in Rockies history for a pitcher’s first two career starts. Davis was also the only Rockies pitcher to not allow an extra-base hit through his first two starts. But it took Arizona just two innings to teach Davis some big-league lessons. He departed, not only with a sore elbow but having given up se...A powerhouse US doctor slain in Sudan, “killed for nothing”

By ELLEN KNICKMEYER (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — Bound to Sudan by ailing parents and his devotion to treating the poor there, American doctor Bushra Ibnauf Sulieman kept working as long as he could after fighting engulfed Sudan’s capital. For days after battles between two rival Sudanese commanders erupted in Khartoum on April 15, the 49-year-old Sulieman treated the city’s wounded. He and other doctors ventured out as explosions shook the walls of homes where Khartoum’s people cowered inside. Gunfire between the two factions battling for control resounded in the streets.“Say, ‘Nothing will happen to us except what God has decreed for us,’” Sulieman, a U.S.-born gastroenterologist who divided his time and work between Iowa City, Iowa, and Khartoum, said in one of his last messages to worried friends on Facebook last week, as fighting persisted. ”And in God let the believers put their trust.”The morning that Sulieman ...CU Buffs lose Seydou Traore to transfer portal, add JUCO lineman

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is warning residents that the newest Omicron strain of COVID-19 may come with some new symptoms. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicts the new variant, a strain called XBB.1.16 and known as “Arcturus,” currently accounts for 8% of COVID-19 cases in California and 10% nationwide. Conjunctivitis, more commonly known as “pink eye,” is the newest possible symptom of this variant of the Coronavirus. So far, the L.A. County Health Department has confirmed three reported cases of the new strain. “Observational data suggests that people infected with XBB.1.16 may be more likely to experience conjunctivitis as a symptom of their COVID infection, along with more traditional COVID symptoms, such as fever, cough and shortness of breath,” the Health Department said in a statement. “Historically, conjunctivitis was reported in 1 to 3% of COVID-19 cases.” Los Angeles County COVID-19 emergency declarati...Game 7 live updates: Stakes couldn’t be higher as Warriors-Kings goes down to the wire

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama judge has rejected a former police officer’s claim that he should be immune under self-defense laws from a new trial on murder charges.William “Ben” Darby, whose 2021 murder conviction was overturned in March by the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals, had asked for a hearing to determine whether Alabama’s “stand your ground” law should shield the former Huntsville officer from a second trial.Madison County Circuit Judge Alan Mann ruled against the motion Tuesday without elaborating.Darby was on duty in 2018 when he shot and killed Jeffrey Parker, who was holding a gun to his own head. Parker had phoned 911 saying he was armed and planned to kill himself.Darby was sentenced to 25 years in prison after a jury convicted him.A different judge ruled Darby was not immune under self-defense rules before the original trial. But his lawyers said that ruling needs to be reconsidered after the appeals court ruled the trial judge should have given jurors ...Cardinals broadcaster, World Series champ Mike Shannon dies

Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom ‘frustrated’ on injured list

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom is “definitely frustrated” that he’s landed on the injured list with right forearm tightness.“I want to be out there,” deGrom said Sunday, speaking to the media for the first time since the IL news. “There’s a little inflammation in there, so the goal is to get that knocked out here in the next few days and resume throwing. So, staying optimistic about it.”DeGrom exited after 3 2/3 innings in his last start against the New York Yankees on Friday night. It was the second time in his past three starts that he left early with an injury. During a start at Kansas City on April 17, deGrom went four innings before leaving with right wrist soreness.DeGrom was plagued by injuries the past two seasons with the New York Mets as he threw 156 1/3 innings over 26 starts.“Obviously, the goal was to not go on the IL. The goal was to make 30-plus starts and put this team in position to win,” deGrom said. “It’s disappointing to not be able to do ...Arraez’s sacrifice fly gives Marlins series sweep vs Cubs

Trains arrive every 10 minutes on Metro — more or less. It’s a big improvement from the half-hour wait times riders experienced a little over a year ago after 60% of the rail fleet was sidelined due to the 7000-series derailment. But Metro still has more work to do, Metro CEO and General Manager Randy Clarke said on WTOP’s DMV Download podcast.“The frequency in the system is pretty good right now, not to where we need it to be,” Clarke said. “We feel that there’s gonna be another increase this summer. And then [by] the fall, we hope to be back to relay that full Metro service.”By summer’s end, Metro rail headways would range between five to eight minutes, according to Clarke. But a looming budget threatens these gains.“We can’t afford to run the service you would get at the end of the summer. We can’t afford to run that the next summer,” Clarke said. The Washington Area Transit Authority (WMATA) budget is short mo...Latest news
