What Nico Sturm said the Sharks can learn from the Colorado Avalanche

Nico Sturm opened the small wooden box that held the Stanley Cup ring that he earned last season as a member of the Colorado Avalanche. Inside was not only the 14-karat white gold ring, set with diamonds, rubies, and sapphires, but a short video that showed the team’s on-ice celebration right after their Game 6 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.Sturm received the ring Tuesday night after the Sharks were walloped 6-0 by the Avalanche, a completely one-sided affair that showed the obvious disparity between the two franchises. One appears ready to chase another Cup, the other has one of the worst records in the NHL as it tries to lay a foundation for its own success years down the line.“Obviously, it takes a while to build an organization and a roster to where everybody, every piece fits exactly where it needs to be,” Sturm said. “I think that’s what we’re trying to do, is trying to get guys and players that play a certain part, and that doesn’t happen from today u...SF Giants’ Camilo Doval on representing the Dominican Republic in WBC, his role model, his horses and Johnny Cueto’s mentorship

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — It’s the day before he is set to depart for the World Baseball Classic, and Camilo Doval is popping pink bubbles in front of his locker. His first spring outing produced radar-gun readings in the mid-90s, prompting inquiries that manager Gabe Kapler brushed off earlier in the morning, and Doval quelled any concerns with his final tune up before jetting off to Miami. He popped 101 once, and a couple more times at triple digits. It was nice to be back in the ninth inning, even in a spring exhibition, Doval agreed, before blowing another bubble. (Although the 101 mph pitch was still shy of the franchise-record-setting 104 mph he hit last September.)Still only 25 years old, Doval has come to embrace the ninth inning and the pressure-packed situations that accompany it. In 2021, he became the youngest Giant in history to save a game in the postseason by recording the final three outs of Game 3 of the NLDS, and he followed that in 2022 with 27 saves (with a 2.53 E...Bay Area Walgreens location halts food sales due to rodents

MILL VALLEY, Calif. (KRON) -- Food, candy and beverage sales at a Walgreens location in Mill Valley were suspended due to a rodent problem, KRON4 has learned. An employee at the store informed a KRON4 reporter who visited the store on Tuesday night that they had been told not to sell food items from their store, but were not informed why or how long the stoppage would last. WiLD 94.9 remembers beloved morning show host JV since disappearance Video and photos from the Walgreens, which is located on Shoreline Drive, shows shelves stocked full of food with signs taped to the front. Amanda Zurawski stepped up to a podium outside the Texas Capitol. Close your eyes, she began, and picture someone you hold incredibly dear. “Now imagine someone telling you you’re going to lose that person in the very near future, but they can’t tell you exactly when or how,” she said. “On top of that, there’s a very high likelihood that you’ll get extremely sick, maybe even near death, as you wait for that person you love to die.”“It sounds like a pretty sick and twisted plot to a dystopian novel,” she continued. “But it’s not. It’s exactly what happened to me while pregnant in Texas.”Zurawski and her husband had known each other since preschool. They married in 2019 and were excited to start a family. After months of fertility treatments, Zurawski learned she was pregnant. The couple was beyond thrilled; they decided to name their daughter Willow. Zurawski was “cruising though” her second trimester, she said, and had just finished the invite list for her upcoming baby shower when ...Denmark hopes to pump some climate gas beneath the sea floor

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Denmark pushed the button Wednesday on an ambitious project that aims to bury vast amounts of planet-heating carbon dioxide gas beneath the North Sea floor, in the hope that it can help the Nordic nation and others meet climate targets. An international consortium including chemicals giant INEOS and gas and oil producer Wintershall Dea said Project Greensand in Denmark’s North Sea will be the world’s first cross-border carbon storage project.Denmark’s Crown Prince Frederik gave the symbolic order to begin pumping CO2 into the depleted reservoir of the Nini West oil field, 50 years after his father Prince Henrik celebrated the start of oil and gas exploration off the Danish coast.“It gives me great pleasure today to be able to reverse the traffic in the pipes and send CO2 back into the Danish underground to the benefit of the climate for Denmark, for Europe, but also for the planet,” said Frederik.Initially the gas will be shipped in liquid form ...BNP Paribas Open Results

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — Police in the capital of Georgia used water cannon and tear-gas late Wednesday to disperse demonstrators around the parliament building protesting a draft law that they say could stifle media freedom and civil society.Lawmakers on Tuesday approved the first reading of the proposed law, which would require media and nongovernmental organizations that receive over 20% of their funding from foreign sources to register as “agents of foreign influence.” More than 60 protesters were arrested outside parliament in Tbilisi after the approval. The measure is similar to one enacted in Russia in 2012 that has been used to shut down or discredit organizations critical of the government. Opponents see it as potentially obstructing Georgia’s stated intention of joining NATO and the European Union one day. The draft law “goes directly against the Georgian authorities’ declared ambition to receive candidate status for EU membership,” said a statement from European...Grains mixed, Livestock mixed

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Everyone but Angela Bassett is a first-time Oscar nominee, and even she is a first-timer in this category. But while Bassett seemingly has this locked up, there is a stunning breadth of experience among the supporting actress nominees, showing that breakout moments aren’t exclusively the territory of the very young. All will be celebrated during Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony, which airs live on ABC beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern. And there’s still time to catch up on their performances before the show. Here’s a bit more about this year’s contenders.ANGELA BASSETTIt’s been 29 years since Angela Bassett’s last Oscar nomination, for playing Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” and though her nomination for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” was widely expected, it still had a profound effect on her. “I’m literally sitting here holding my head, and holding my heart,” she told the AP nomination morning. “I’m excited, I’m grateful, I’m nervous. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration on Wednesday proposed strengthening a rule aimed at reducing polluted wastewater from coal-burning power plants that has contaminated streams, lakes and underground aquifers across the nation. Under the Clean Water Act, the Environmental Protection Agency sets pollution standards to limit wastewater discharge from the power industry and other businesses. The Trump administration rolled back pollution standards so utilities could use cheaper technologies and take longer to comply with guidelines for cleaning coal ash and toxic heavy metals such as mercury, arsenic and selenium from plant wastewater before dumping it into waterways. The Biden administration’s proposal for stricter standards at coal-burning plants also encourages the plants to retire or switch to other fuels such as natural gas by 2028. EPA Administrator Michael Regan said the plan would particularly benefit low-income communities that have been disproportionately affecte...Latest news
