AUSTIN (Nexstar) — The Public Education Committee is considering two different bills on Tuesday that aim to increase retention in Texas public schools, as the state struggles with teachers leaving the profession in droves. IN-DEPTH: Why are Texas teachers quitting and what are the solutions? Two of the bills being considered are part of Speaker Dade Phelan's education priority bills this session.House Bill 11 — authored by Rep Harold Dutton (D-Houston) — attempts to codify many of the recommendations made by the Teacher Vacancy Task Force. The group consisted of more than 40 public school teachers and administrators, who spent more than a year looking at why teachers are quitting and retiring in order to identify possible solutions. One of the task force's recommendations that Dutton included in his bill is an increase in the state’s per-pupil funding – or basic allotment – from $6,160 to $6,210. St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter’s pitch to voters to support increasing the city’s local sales tax for parks and road repair might not make it to ballot this November, given competing bills at the state Legislature. When the Minnesota Senate Committee on Taxes convened last week, the St. Paul mayor testified alongside counterparts from 18 other cities and counties pitching individual proposals to increase their local sales taxes to raise funds for roads, parks, public safety facilities or other favored projects.Don’t expect a similar showcase in the Minnesota House, at least not anytime soon. The House Committee on Taxes, chaired by state Rep. Aisha Gomez, DFL-Minneapolis, has declined to hear the same flurry of legislative bills, given somewhat clashing proposals for metro-wide sales taxes for housing and transportation.“The local option sales taxes … in a sense they are competing,” acknowledged state Rep. Mike Howard, DFL-Richfield, a lead author of...‘Air’ review: Damon and Affleck team up for the story of Nike’s pursuit of Michael Jordan

Michael Phillips | Chicago Tribune“Air” is a good time, as well as a triumph of sports marketing in every conceivable way. It’s a docudrama — really more of a docucomedy-drama, with workplace banter and zingers for fuel — about how Nike marketing executive Sonny Vaccaro, played by Matt Damon, convinced his boss Phil Knight, played by co-star and director Ben Affleck, to cough up the funds to make the pitch to get the basketball star for the ages to sell their shoes. It’s a movie about winners, winning and millions. We do not see Michael Jordan in “Air,” aside from a few shots of an essentially nonverbal actor’s back, or the back of his head. He’s the guy in the room everyone’s talking about, a wondrous, never-fully-revealed figure. Like Jesus Christ in “Ben-Hur.”“Air” is also about spending money to make money, which would make it a period piece in much of corporate America today even if it weren’t, in fact, set 39 years ago. In sports movie terms “Air” is the opposite of director Be...Loons’ dance party in St. Louis a show of their collective spirit this season

The connection Minnesota United players have formed this season was revealed moments after the Loons’ 1-0 victory over St. Louis City on Saturday.A dance party broke out in the visiting team’s locker room at CityPark. With the Latino hit song “Danza Kaduro” playing, team ham/midfielder Kervin Arriaga entered the scene with hips swiveling. Teammates Dayne St. Clair and Kemar Lawrence greeted him.The broader group encouraged more-reserved center back Micky Tapias to join in by chanting his name, and the Mexican obliged by doing “The Robot.” The party was in full swing and might have violated a noise ordinance.Franco Fragapane picked up the dance off, passed it to Luis Amarilla, then Wil Trapp, Bongi Hlongwane, D.J. Taylor and Mender Garcia. Arriaga capped it by going to the carpet to do “the worm,” while his best bud Joseph Rosales did some back-up moves.MNUFC has reasons to cut a rug. At 3-0-2, they are one of three MLS teams still unbeaten after knocking off previously perfect St. L...Wanted: local creators to share their passion with the community
