SCHOHARIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — According to documents provided by the Albany County Supreme Court, several families in the fatal 2018 Schoharie limo crash trial reached settlements with Mavis Discount Tire. All settlements and amounts are confidential. Get the latest, news, weather, sports and community events delivered right to your inbox! According to Tom Mortati of Harding and Mazzotti—who represents the victims' families—these settlements are specifically with Mavis, and other defendants are not impacted by the agreements. This comes on the heels of the New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division, Third Judicial Department denying Mavis' appeal to be dropped from civil lawsuits related to the crash in April. The initial civil lawsuits against Mavis allege they were at fault for allowing the limousine to be out on the road. They further allege that Mavis botched the brake repairs in 2016—and again in 2018—but still gave Prestige Limousine an inspection sticker for the limo. Aurora still needs to conserve waterRe: “Water charge reversal on tap,” June 17 news storyI find it appalling that Aurora is considering lifting its watering restrictions because we’ve had a wet May/June and the reservoirs are 68% full. We have a lot of summer ahead of us and, if the past few years are any indication, there will not be much moisture. We need to conserve the water that we have gained from a heavy snowfall winter and a wetter-than-average spring. Stop trying to appease a few complaining voters and stick by your guns, conserve the water we have and thank God for a generous wet winter and spring.Jae Leist, LakewoodThe key to safety and equityRe: “DPS reverses ’20 ban on police in schools decision follows march shooting,” June 16 news storyAs evidenced by the 4-3 vote to reinstate school resource officers, the Denver School Board is having to balance the interests of its various communities. A California man vacationing in Europe recently captured video of a tourist vandalizing the Colosseum in Rome.Orange resident Ryan Lutz was on a two-month tour of Europe when he shot the video. “Like a lot of Americans, I probably, you know, saw 'Gladiator' back in the early 2000s … and got entranced by ancient Rome … Yeah, I wanted to see it and it came to life,” Lutz said. But his visit was ruined when he found a guy carving his name into one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Lutz recorded the tourist and said he confronted him, but the video shows the vandal grinning as he continues to carve with what appeared to be a set of keys.A tourist is seen vandalizing the Colosseum in Rome (Ryan Lutz)“I was pretty upset," said Lutz, who was not sure where the person was from. “You always hate to see any tourist doing that … You kind of hold out hope that they're not American," Lutz said, adding that American tourists already have a pretty bad reputation in Europe.
