Failure of single component caused Washington seaplane crash that killed 10, NTSB says

SEATTLE (AP) — U.S. investigators have confirmed that a mechanical issue caused the seaplane crash that killed 10 people off an island in Washington state last year. The National Transportation Safety Board, which investigated the Sept. 4, 2022, crash, said Thursday that a single component of a critical flight control system failed, causing an unrecoverable, near-vertical descent into Puget Sound’s Mutiny Bay near Whidbey Island.About 85% of the aircraft was recovered from the ocean floor several weeks after the crash.NTSB investigators examining the wreckage found that a component called an actuator, which moves the plane’s horizontal tail and controls the airplane’s pitch, had become disconnected. That failure would have made it impossible for the pilot to control the airplane. Evidence showed the failure happened before the crash, not as a result of it, investigators concluded. The plane was a de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter turboprop operated by Renton-based Fri...Ramsey County attorney’s office: White Bear Lake officers justified in firing shots back at man in January

On to the next.Jockeying to be the next Speaker of the House is in full swing after Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) shocking ouster, with the two declared candidates — Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) — lobbying for support and lawmakers beginning to pick sides in what is expected to be an intense race.Endorsements are rolling in for each of the candidates, and both are making the rounds to various groups within the GOP conference to earn support.A clear front-runner has yet to emerge. And some lawmakers are wondering if any candidate will be able to garner enough support to win the gavel.“From having gone through the Speaker fight in January, I don’t think there was a path for Scalise to get the votes then and talking to colleagues I don’t think there will be a path now. And right now it’s not clear that Jim has a path either,” Rep. Warren Davidson (R-Ohio), who endorsed Jordan, told The Hill Thursday. That could g...Halloween décor in Glens Falls prompts fire department response

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (WPIX) – Firefighters in an upstate New York town mistakenly thought a Halloween decoration was a house fire. What first looked like a house in flames ended up being an illusion. The bright orange flames lighting up the interior of the home were so convincing that Glens Falls dispatchers sent crews to the Sanford Street address for "a report of a confirmed structure fire." Get the latest news, weather, sports and entertainment delivered right to your inbox! The firefighters were so impressed that they got permission to post the house on their social media accounts, even telling people to go check them out.“To our surprise this was an amazing Halloween decoration,” fire officials wrote on Facebook. “This display will be up Friday and Saturday nights for the public’s entertainment until the end of the month.”The homeowners created the jaw-dropping display using "two LED lights, a box fan and a silver sheet," combined with a fog machine, according to the fire depart...Seeing strange lights in the sky? ST. LOUIS, Mo. - It's not UFOs you're seeing in the skies over the region. Not to worry, it's just a SpaceX Starlink satellite traveling overhead.Starlink satellites, first launched in 2019, are used to provide broadband internet to customers around the globe. Following multiple launches of additional satellites each year, SpaceX has roughly 2,000 now orbiting Earth. There are a few online resources that allow you to find out when you can see Starlink satellites parade across the sky.First, it’s important to note that when you see a line of satellites, they won’t stay like that forever. They’ll eventually separate to find their own orbits. Because the chains travel so quickly, you may even have the chance to have multiple sightings in one night. Here are three sites that let you see if satellites will be near you anytime soon. One is Find Starlink, available both as a website and a mobile app. You can track nearby satellite chains in one of three ways.First, you can search your lo...Kiszla: Who’s the only person that can stop Nuggets center Nikola Jokic from becoming top 10 player in basketball history?

Only one person can stop Nuggets center Nikola Jokic from becoming one of the top 10 players in basketball history.Who is that person? Well, in our dusty old cowtown, we fondly call him the Joker.Jokic loves basketball, but hates saying goodbye to the peace and comfort of his home in Serbia for the hoopla and hassle of being the best player in the NBA. So here’s my advice: Cherish every minute he wears a Nuggets uniform.“Will Niklola be a guy that plays 20 years in the NBA? No. I’d be shocked if he played 20 years in the NBA,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone told me, as we stood outside the Denver locker room on the eve of training camp.At the top of his game at age 28, Jokic might not be done getting better. And for those of you keeping score at home: While leading the Nuggets to 16 victories during the NBA playoffs, capped by beating the Miami Heat in the Finals, he was even more dominant on the court last season than the prior two years, when Joker was named the league’s most ...Six-vehicle crash closes Interstate 70 eastbound at Sixth Avenue
