Former Theranos executive Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani will be heading to prison later this month after an appeals court rejected his bid to remain free while he contests his conviction for carrying out a blood-testing hoax with his former boss and lover, Elizabeth Holmes. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision late Thursday refusing Balwani’s request to delay the start of his nearly 13-year prison sentence still leaves open the question of when he will have to surrender to authorities.Jeffrey Coopersmith, one of Balwani’s lawyers, proposed that Balwani, 57, report to prison April 20 in a motion filed with U.S. District Judge Edward Davila, who presided over Balwani’s trial last year and imposed his sentence in December. Balwani’s proposed April 20 reporting date is a week before Holmes, Theranos’ founder and CEO, is scheduled to begin a more than 11-year prison sentence after being convicted on four counts of fraud and conspiracy last year.Holmes,...US probes crash involving Tesla that hit student leaving bus

DETROIT (AP) — U.S. road safety regulators have sent a team to investigate a crash involving a Tesla that may have been operating on a partially automated driving system when it struck a student who had just exited a school bus.The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Friday that it will probe the March 15 crash in Halifax County, North Carolina, that injured a 17-year-old student. The State Highway Patrol said the driver of the 2022 Tesla Model Y, a 51-year-old male, failed to stop for the bus, which was displaying all of its activated warning devices.Sending special investigation teams to crashes means that the agency suspects the Teslas were operating systems that can handle some aspects of driving, including Autopilot and “Full Self-Driving.” Despite the names, Tesla says these are driver-assist systems and that drivers must be ready to intervene at all times.A message was left Friday seeking comment from Tesla.Tillman Mitchell, a student at the Haliwa-Saponi Tribal Sc...Firefighters keeping an eye on fire in large water tank in DC

D.C. firefighters were keeping an eye on a fire inside the dome of a large, five-story water tank in Southeast D.C. on Friday. The situation initially prompted a hazmat response, and D.C. Fire and EMS issued a shelter-in-place for a “minimal area” around the tank. However, officials later lifted the guidance and the department says there is no danger to the public. As of 1:15 p.m., a few hours after the fire was first reported, a small amount of smoke continued to emit from the top hatch of the tank, according to a tweet from D.C. Fire and EMS. A thermal imager on a D.C. police helicopter indicated a “heat signature” inside the tank. There were no plans to “attack the fire” by entering the tank, D.C. Fire spokesman Vito Maggiolo said earlier. Instead, crews are monitoring the situation, he said. By Friday afternoon, that effort had “downscaled” to just a few units, according to a tweet from the department. As for how the fire started, Magg...1 dead, 3 hurt after crash in Prince George’s County

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bryce Harper went deep for the Phillies in their home opener. Sort of.Harper hit batting practice home runs — one more encouraging sign for the National League champions who are struggling in the early going that the two-time NL MVP could return to the lineup much earlier than expected, at the very least well before the All-Star break. The Phillies have Harper on the 10-day injured list as he recovers from offseason reconstructive elbow surgery rather than the 60-day IL, which would have ruled him out until May 29.Manager Rob Thomson watched the NLCS MVP take his cuts Friday at Citizens Bank Park about 4 1/2 hours before the Phillies played the Cincinnati Reds. Harper took on-field batting practice earlier this week at Yankee Stadium for the first time since Tommy John surgery last fall.“It’s not bothering him to swing the bat,” Thomson said.Thomson said there was still no timeline on Harper’s return and the biggest concern was sliding.
